  • Family-run village pub site in rural northern Cumbria
  • A 10-minute drive from Carlisle and 20 minutes from Gretna Green
  • Food, real ales, open fire and a beer garden
The team at The Wellington Inn and Caravan Park describe their part of the world as 'Cumbria's best-kept secret' – and they've got a pretty good point. If you're looking for somewhere far from the crowds of the Lake District yet close to plenty of scenic day trips, the quiet countryside to the west of Carlisle is full of nature reserves, forests and gorgeous coastline that might just be what you're looking for… This spacious and well-maintained site is located to the rear of a friendly village pub (open from Wednesday to Sunday only) in the small settlement of Great Orton. Pitching up here brings a lot of satisfying pub food and drink – including real ales – within easy reach. If you fancy a barbecue, just bring one along and send a member of your party out to pick up a few cuts at the village butcher's, a quarter of a mile down the road. Carlisle's amenities, eateries and family-friendly attractions are all approximately 10 minutes away by car. The Scottish border at Gretna Green is also a quick 20-minute journey to the north, making The Wellington Inn and Caravan Park an excellent stop-off point on longer road trips. Guests have access to pub toilets (during pub opening hours) but please note there are no showers on site, and no toilets by the pitches. Dogs are welcome on site and are free to join you for a drink in the beer garden, but unfortunately cannot be taken inside the pub.

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked Lovely little site which is very well kept, large pitches and good waste facilities. A nice pub with great food is a stones throw away.

Disliked No showers & toilet facilities are in the pub, when closed you are on your own.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us this review and glad you enjoyed your stay.
We do advertise that we don't have toilets or showers on site.
But you are welcome to use the pub toilets while the pub is open 👍

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked Lovely clean peaceful site, well maintained and right beside the pub (closed mon & tues) but wasn’t an issue for us. Fresh water, grey & black waste disposal. No toilets or showers available but for us not an issue as self contained. Large level gravel pitches, Self check in as pub closed, nice and easy. Good location just off motorway. Would stay again for sure.

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked Lovely, clean and quiet location. Had the basics needed for the caravan.
The pub served excellent food and the staff and customers were very welcoming and friendly. Although its a dog friendly site, the pub doesn't allow dogs inside the pub due to its smaller size, but they are welcome in the large beer garden.
The location is close to both Carlisle and Gretna Green, so lots of exploring opportunities.
We will definitely book again.

From the manager: Sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us!!

Thanks to the help of the team at pitch up we are very up-front in the the discription of our site!!
So you have everything you need to make a choice on if our place has the facilities you need!!

We do advertise that we don't have toilets or showers on site!
And that you can use the pub toilets while the pub is open.

We don't believe we can do anymore than be
up-front with you before you read it and book.

As a family owned and ran by myself and my wife we also take great pride in our site and grounds
Keeping the grass manicured the pitches free from weeds the communal areas clean.
Ourselves and our excellent staff try and providing the best customer care without intruding in you stay and always happy to chat and help you find placesto visis or shop etc.

So we are sad you felt the need to score us in this way.

Happy travels Barrie

Liked An unexpected find tucked away. Pub was packed and staff were friendly. Site had most of what you need for a brief stop.

Disliked Only toilet facilities are in the pub and no shower facilities. Boy racer with loud music at unearthly time in pub carpark not appreciated.

From the manager: Apologies on the music from the car this isn't the norm but a bit out of our hands.
If it was persistent then we could of done somthing about it.
We do advertise that we don't have toilets or showers on site but you can use the toilets while the pub is open on the pitch up description before you book👍

Local attractions

Wildlife isn't hard to come by in this part of northern Cumbria, as you're a mere five-minute drive from Watchtree Nature Reserve, a former RAF airbase that's been rewilded and has a number of tarmac car-free cycle trails to explore (with bike and tricycle hire also available). For more time outdoors, head five minutes down the road to the Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre and learn about how to handle a hawk like a pro. Having Carlisle so close by is also a major plus – drop the kids off at Fusion Trampoline Park (10 minutes) for a big old bounce, push your limits and scale the different courses at Eden Rock (15 minutes), a local indoor climbing centre, or learn more about the area at Tullie House Museum And Art Gallery (10 minutes). Drive slightly further afield and you'll quickly come to more top-quality days out. The nearest waterside spot in the Lake District National Park is Bassenthwaite, half an hour from base, a relatively quiet lake that's home to rare bird species including osprey.
