  • Rural site with Pennines views, close to the Lakes and Solway Firth
  • A 10-minute drive to the North Pennines; half an hour to the Lakes
  • Peaceful pitches with walks from site; close to a foodie pub and shops
What a spot for walkers, cyclists and indeed anybody who wants to get out and about in spectacular countryside. Cairndale Caravan Park is in a fabulous location with easy access to not one – but two – Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and if that wasn’t enough, the Lake District National Park is on hand too. This is quite a small site at the foot of the Pennines National Landscape, and as it’s surrounded by greenery wherever you look, you might just want to lie back in or by your tent and take in the views. Chances are, however, that the call of all those walks across moorland to spectacular waterfalls will spur you into action. You might prefer to pack everybody into the car and head to the Lakes (30 minutes’ drive) to go boating on the water or walk a section of the Ullswater Way. Slightly further afield, the Solway Coast National Landscape (45 minutes) will reveal seemingly endless beaches for kids and dogs to romp around on. If you fancy cosy nights around the barbecue, stock up on grill bits and bobs at Brampton’s convenience stores (take a look at the ruined abbey while you’re there). Otherwise there’s a destination pub in Cumwhitton (five minutes' drive) and a huge choice of restaurants and takeaways in Carlisle (20 minutes).

What customers say

A peaceful spot with rural views, praised for its clean facilities and hook-up pitches. Great for walks and local pubs. Some guests found facilities basic, site a bit tired, and pitches small. Occasional lighting/shower issues noted.

Liked This site was lovely and peaceful. Small but perfectly formed. You had all the facilities you needed. Yes they were basic, but were kept clean and tidy. It was lovely to spend an evening watching the cows grazing in the field opposite.

Liked Einfacher, sauberer und sehr ruhiger Stellplatz. Alles was man benötigt ist da. Etwas in die Jahre gekommen, aber alles in allem ein guter Platz

Disliked Nicht direkt negativ, aber es gibt nur zwei Toiletten für den ganzen Stellplatz. Sollte man dran denken.

Powered gravel and earth caravan site

Liked A small site in a pretty, quiet, rural setting, I think about 6 generous tourer pitches and some static caravans. All have EHU and a tap. Fabulous tall pine trees. A lovely relaxed ambience. Wash facilities had hot continuous showers and there was hot water for dish-washing too. Everything clean and tidy. We would definitely stay here again and would have stayed longer had we not already booked elsewhere for the next night.

Disliked Nothing.

Liked Very nice quiet site. Level ish pitches. Clean toilets and hot showers.

Disliked Could do with more than one shower. Always handy to have more hooks in the toilet block too. No lights in the toilet cubicles.

Liked Not much going for this campsite. Best to steer clear if this one.

Disliked No manager or caretaker. Plenty of noise from farm machinery and cattle. Even worse...no control over noisy neighbours.
Infested with flies....I kid you not. Flies galore and they were horrible and unrelenting. No view. Lousy facilities.

I made a mistake booking this one. We got fed up and left early ....losing two nights for which we had paid.

This is a campsite to avoid. I am telling you exactly what we experienced. There was no one to complain to....and in any case what would they would do about the flies, tractors and cattle? Poor facilities.

Local attractions

Take the trail of the remains of a 73-mile Roman wall through rural landscapes… and when you’ve finished with Hadrian’s Wall (half an hour’s drive), pedal, hike or trot your way through the gorgeous North Pennines National Landscape (10 minutes) or let yourself unwind with watersports, paddles and more properly good hikes in the Lake District National Park (30 minutes). The Solway Coast National Landscape (45 minutes) is there when you’re in need of some stunning seaside scenery instead. As for sailing or fishing, well, Talkin Tarn Country Park (10 minutes) is the place for that. Golf is just 30 minutes away too – and as for racing events, they can be found over at the Carlisle Racecourse (20 minutes). For low-key days of shopping, sightseeing and strolling the streets, Brampton (15 minutes) has a market and ruined abbey, while the market town of Penrith (half an hour) has another great buzzy atmosphere. If it’s ancient villages and riverside strolls that also take your fancy, then you’ll have easy enough access to the Vale of Eden (30 minutes) from this site.
