Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: We stayed at the camp field at Ivy House Equestrian Centre. Joan the host met us on arrival and we found her to be friendly and helpful. The site facilities as advertised are basic but they are clean and well maintained. The camping field is flat and only big enough for a few tents, which we found ideal. You can also park next to your pitch which made setting up easier. Our time here was relaxing and the nights were peaceful. There is also a pub just a couple of minutes walk from the site that serves great food and ale. We enjoyed our stay here and would visit again.

Disliked: Disliked nothing because when we made our reservation we were aware of the facilities on-site.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Friendly owner, met me when I arrived and showed me round. Lovely clean (proper) toilet with hot water and washing-up room next door, as well as drinking water on tap outside. Very dog-friendly (even when my dog decided to wander into the farmhouse's kitchen!). The site was lovely, with the horses (and foals) in the field right next to us, so close I could hear them munching the grass. Free-range chickens wandering about and cows in a nearby field, too. The local pub was a 2 minute walk away and they had an acoustic night on the Saturday night when I was there. Great base for lots of fantastic walks and visiting the pretty villages nearby.

Disliked: Not really a dislike but just be aware that this is a working farm and cows and cockerels like to wake up quite early!

Unpowered concrete slab caravan site

Liked: Great spot on an equestrian centre so surrounded by horses, chickens and no light pollution. Nice loo to use and a clean grassy pitch. One suggestion would be to bring ear plugs due to the cockerels! Lovely host Joan who was really helpful and added bonus with the pub being a 1 minute walk away! It’s open Thurs to Sunday and has great music and staff.

Local attractions

Fancy ticking a few grand old buildings off your list? At Lowther Castle and Gardens (25 minutes' drive) you can walk the dog in landscaped gardens and tour the ruins, while there are four centuries of history to discover at Dalemain Mansion and Historic Gardens (25 minutes) alongside woods and parkland to wander. If you like a purpose to your hiking, aim for Shap Abbey (30 minutes) with its romantic ruins, pleasant waterside strolls and wild swimming spots on the Lowther river. Likewise the climb up to Cauldron Snout (roughly 2.5 hours) is rewarded by a tumbling waterfall and picnic options around peaceful Cow Green Reservoir. Fans of Roman remains might care to walk the closest section of Hadrian’s Wall (45 minutes) near Gilsland. Learn all about the history of Lake District National Park at Rheged Visitor Centre (30 minutes), which has got a 3D cinema (just in case of chilly weather), before heading to the mysterious hilltop Cockpit Stone Circle (40 minutes) or on to Ullswater (30 minutes) for a steam-boat cruise around the lake.
