  • Relaxed 30-acre campsite bordering the Trent and Mersey Canal
  • A 10-minute drive from Northwich; Chester 40 minutes
  • On-site tea rooms serving breakfasts, coffees, scones and cakes
Whether you're in the mood for merrymaking, meandering through the countryside or day trips to Manchester city centre, Oakwood Marina is a relaxed waterside campsite in rural Cheshire that ticks all the right boxes. As it borders the Trent and Mersey Canal, a wonderful waterway that runs all the way from Derby to Liverpool, walking and cycling routes along the towpath can be accessed in a few seconds – an excellent way to take in the scenery of the surrounding Cheshire Plains. The marina runs for almost a mile along the canal and hosts a constantly changing collection of up to 90 colourful narrowboats, while the campsite is similarly spacious, covering roughly 30 acres of gently sloping land with views over the water's edge. The surrounding fields are either grazed by cows or mown for hay just a couple of times a year, meaning there's lots of long grass around to shelter passing wildlife (a few footpaths have been cut between the pitches to help guide you through the fields). Guests staying at Oakwood Marina are welcome to light campfires and barbecues (in the designated areas) and have access to useful marina facilities like a laundry room, toilet block, showers and washing-up area. There's also an on-site tea rooms, where you can stop for all-day breakfasts, coffees, scones, cakes and other goodies. To top it all off, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, there's a pizza trailer and an outdoor bar open from 4pm until late. Oakwood Marina is just under a mile from a local organic farm shop and roughly two miles from Rudheath, where there is a railway station and a well-stocked supermarket.

What customers say

Top spot! Peaceful, spacious pitches with great marina views. Friendly staff, clean amenities, tasty cafe food (especially pizzas). Tranquil vibe, but expect some plane noise and busy loos in peak times. Keen to come back!

Liked The staff was accommodating - gave us a big pitch for our group. Lovely food at the tea room again staff lovely can’t do enough for you.

Disliked Few points that I feel people should be aware of before booking (some which I didn’t know until arriving)

You are not allowed to park at your tent or even near your tent (it’s a good 5/10 minute walk to get across to the tents)
Your stuff is taken across for you by the staff on a quad. Only one quad was operating so when busy your waiting a while and it’s a lot more inconvenient then just being able unpack your car on your pitch. If you have small family/lots of stuff you will know what I mean.

The plots are actually mowed down specially for your group depending on size. There was so many spiders/creepy crawlers like so many more then I’ve ever known camping. Maybe due to so many long bushes surrounding. (I know to expect them but we had dozens of like spiders on the tent even packing up they was everywhere)

Just bare in mind it’s near a Marina and there’s lots of bushes/ect round

The tent pitches are a good 5/10 minute walk walk to the little bar and tea room and main toilets

One shower block with one shower in it.

Portalos are the only other toilets on the tent pitches

Again when coming to pack up we just found it so stressful not having the car to pack up as we go so would 100% put us off staying again

Also couldn’t ever get through via phone says they are shut and when texting text replies are very hit and miss

Liked Beautiful spot! So peaceful and private and surrounded by gorgeous scenery. It’s right on a canal so lots of barges here too. The way they have set out their campsite is perfect! Gives everyone plenty of space and privacy. They have such a lovely community feel. It’s really well run so all the amenities are clean and you can tell they really care about what they do! Loved that they take all of your things from your car to your camp spot in their buggy. There’s a bar, a cafe and even pizzas in the evening. Such a lovely touch to a wonderful camping experience. This will definitely be a regular spot for us ☺️ thanks to the team there for making it a lovely experience.

Disliked Nothing - for me everything is perfect. The best place to go a disconnect!

Local attractions

Start off with some good old-fashioned industrial heritage at the Lion Salt Works in the nearby village of Marston (10 minutes' drive), or visit the Anderton Boat Lift (15 minutes) to see how ingenious Victorian engineers negotiated a 50-foot drop between the river Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal. The handsome market town of Northwich (10 minutes) and its bustling high street should be next on your agenda – especially if your stay at Oakwood Marina coincides with its monthly artisanal market. For cities where there's always something on, you could head to Chester (40 minutes) or Manchester (40 minutes), both of which have top museums, kid-friendly attractions, shopping opportunities and historic quarters to explore. Need a breather after all that? Fresh air – and plenty of it – is available at Marbury Country Park (15 minutes), Tatton Park (20 minutes) or Dunham Massey (25 minutes), a National Trust-managed property with a deer park and garden that makes the place well worth visiting all year round.
