Fishing for a break in the north west of England? Willow Lake Yurts, a timber yurt glamping site near Chester in Cheshire, might be a catch. Privacy is an important part your stay here: the site is entirely yours while you’re here. Willow Lake Yurts is in the grounds of The Groves Fisheries, and is a top spot for fishing getaways. Take a seat at the edge of the private lake on site and try your luck at catching carp, roach, tench and rudd. Don’t worry if you’re not an expert with the rod and reel – the lake is well stocked, so beginners should have no trouble landing that first big catch. If fishing doesn’t float your boat, there’s lots to do in the area, from the Chester Zoo to the oldest racecourse still in use in England, the Roodee. Golfers can tee off at Cheshire courses all around (such as swish Hoylake, venue for The Open in 2014), and if you're really up for countryside adventuring you can cross the border into Wales and Snowdonia National Park within the hour. Amid all the local gallivanting it's worth leaving some time for the site's big feature: a swish hot tub with massage seats, foot massage, LED lighting and Bluetooth speakers – plus a fine view over the fishing lake (just the place to while away a chilled evening or few…) The on-site cooking shack and washing-up shack are fully stocked and look out over fields and ponds.

History buffs should take a trip into the Roman city of Chester, just 15 minutes away, to explore the cathedral, city walls – the only complete set of ancient defensive walls in Britain – and Roman amphitheatre. You can also marry history and shopping with a trip to the 700-year-old Rows, half-timbered galleries that form a second tier of shops above those at ground-level, and believed to be the only example of this in the world. There are also plenty of activities in the area to keep kids happy: Chester Zoo is less than 10 minutes away and Blue Planet Aquarium in nearby Ellesmere Port is just a five-minute drive from Willow Lake.
