  • Back to basics pop-up site a mile from Marsden village centre
  • Next to Standedge Tunnel and five mins' drive to Peak District walks
  • Easy access from the A62 and close to the M62
What a great location this is for a pop-up campsite – Colne Valley Campsite is thoroughly rural in atmosphere and yet conveniently only about five minutes’ drive from the village of Marsden (a handy place indeed for shops, pubs and places to eat… as well as train and bus services). Getting here (and out and about for day trips) should be pretty straightforward too, as this West Yorkshire site is only a short way from the A62 and not far from the M62 between Oldham and Huddersfield (both of which are about 20 minutes’ drive away). Stay here and you’ll be in a prime position for forays into the Peak District National Park, with popular spots like Wessenden Head, Butterley Reservoir and Blackpool Bridge within 20 minutes’ drive. That said, you won’t need to travel that far if you want to get out for a walk – the site is on the edge of Marsden Moor and just next to Standedge Tunnel, the country’s longest, highest and deepest canal tunnel. Holmfirth, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the National Coal Mining Museum can all be on your to-visit list here too. As this is a pop-up site, pitches are fairly simple in style – guests have access just to a portable toilet and drinking water supply in terms of facilities (please note there are no showers on site). Campfires and barbecues are permitted on site, so you’ll be able to keep warm and cook your meals over coals.

Local attractions

Make sure you’ve got your walking boots in your luggage when you set off here – you’ll need them for strolls on Marsden Moor, walks along the canal path through Standedge Tunnel and hikes through the Peak District National Park. The edge of the park is about five minutes’ drive away, with popular local walks at Butterley Reservoir (five minutes’ drive), Folly Dolly Falls (15 minutes) and Holme Moss (25 minutes). Even if you don’t immediately recognise the name Holmfirth (20 minutes), you may well find it’s familiar when you get there – the town was the location of the TV series Last of the Summer Wine, and visitors can stop by at Sid’s Café and Compo’s home before boarding a vintage bus to see some of the locations. A couple of other excellent days out nearby are at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (45 minutes), which has a collection of contemporary art around its historic estate, and the National Coal Mining Museum for England (40 minutes), in one of the UK’s oldest working mines and with a train ride and pit ponies to its name too.

Unpowered grass tent site (backpacker)

Liked: The view from the campsite. It was beautiful, and at night there is very little light pollution, so it’s a good spot for stargazing. Liked how water is provided. Liked how close it is to Marsden train station, which means I could visit without having the car. Portaloos were clean. Campsite owner was responsive. Highlight was being able to hire a fire pit and all the bits and bobs needed for a fire. Brilliant stay.

Disliked: Didn’t dislike anything.

Liked: Good value for money. Lovely location. Basic amenities (toilets and hand wash basins) were clean and easy to find. Joe was really friendly and made the rounds of the tents making sure everyone was OK. Complimentary bottled water was a nice touch. Availability of individual fire pits and wood was good and reasonably priced.

Disliked: Grass had been allowed to grow a bit long, which made finding a decent pitch on a sloping site a bit more difficult. Joe explained that the farmer who usually cuts this was sick, so not a major complaint from me. The rubble pathway leading from parking area to the field could be a bit awkward in places, so some risk of a trip, particularly in the dark. We stayed in midge season too. Again, not a complaint, just come prepared if you're staying when they're active.

Liked: Amazing views all round, great for walks and wast too hard to get to. Portable toilets very clean and well looked after. Water provided if needed. And parking was close to camping field.

Disliked: Grass was too long to sit down but we have had bad rain prior to our stay so may be different summer time.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Good experience in comfortable May breeze at wild camping like site. Despite no drinking water, only portable toilets, a few flat pitch, no car park by the tent and noisy neighbor, I really enjoyed the camping in the nature. Sound of creek flow, mountain view, cracking sound of wood in bonfire, sheep visit in the morning and friendly owner Joe, all tranquilized me.
