  • Close to Route 68 and Britain's highest vineyard
  • Spectacular Holme Valley views
  • Farm shop just steps away
Heard of Holmfirth Vineyard? How about Route 68? Listen up, Yorkshire-bound holidaymakers, for these are two Holmfirth places that should feature on your list of Must Visit Forthwith. Holmfirth Vineyard is Britain’s highest and is visited by thousands of wine fans annually, who flow here to take tours and tipples. And Route 68? This is Britain’s longest cycling route, ringing the scenic changes of the land along 355 miles of landscape from Derby, through the Peak District and on to Berwick-upon-Tweed. Both vineyard and cycling could easily be combined on a Yorkshire camping holiday, but doing all the Route 68 miles might lead you to wine about sore muscles afterwards… Say cheers to being close to both with a stay at Whitegate Leisure Caravan and Camp Site, a ten-minute walk from the wines and a prompt pedal from the bike route, which passes along the bottom of the park. The views of the Holme Valley from here are corking (if you’ve seen Last of the Summer Wine you’ll know the lie of the land), all among a peaceful park with toilets and shower block, water point, blue waste disposal and an outdoor washing-up area. The owners have hardcored and turfed over all the pitches here, to keep a countryside feel and prevent tourers and motorhomes getting stuck if it rains. Holmfirth village is about 40 minutes’ walk away and will see you sorted with its pubs, cafés, shops and restaurants; Coddy’s farm shop, steps away from the site, can sort you with bits for a DIY dinner.

Liked: Friendliness on arrival, exceptionally clean showers and toilets (this is the first place I have found where the push button on the shower stays on for 3-4 minutes before going off), great walk into Holmfirth with great independent shops and lots pubs/places to eat

Liked: The proximity to Holmfirth, although we didn’t try doing it on foot (very steep hills). Clean toilets and showers. Friendly welcome. Site feels secure. Lovely walk from the site down to the woods, beautiful surroundings. Stunning views when you walk out of the site (not seen from site unfortunately).

Disliked: The wind turbine, almost constant metallic noise. When it stops it’s lovely. Showers could has been hotter (no way to change the temperature) plus they’re push button. Shower room /toilet quite chilly so it didn’t make for a pleasant experience. Although site rules state no twin axle vehicles, there were a couple, and the one next to us spent most of one day flying his drone over the site, so add that to the wind turbine, it was not peaceful. Make sure to read the directions to site on the sites own website, which aren’t shown on pitchup for some reason. DO NOT FOLLOW YOUR SAT-NAV. Wi-Fi was great. All in all we thought it was expensive for the above reasons, plus you have to pay extra for an awning when all pitches are wide enough for one. I’ll never understand that, it seems like penny-pinching.

Liked: A lovely quiet site with some great views and walks of the local countryside. Showers and toilets were spotless. Very friendly owners who met us any gave us the gate code and site info. Secure site and was well maintained. Great access to Holmfirth for food etc. but it’s a hilly walk back for some. THE CARDING SHED is a must if you like coffee, cake and car memorabilia and in the way to town. The site is a little exposed and can be windy and cold as a result, so pitch up well and bring some warmer clothes than you think and you’ll be sorted. I’ve stated before and have already booked for another stay.

Disliked: Nothing really for me.

Liked: Friendly owners. Spotlessly clean toilets and showers. Great location for walkers with a short walk to Holmfirth (but it may be an hilly walk back for the unfit).

Disliked: One of our group had trouble sleeping with the noise from their wind turbine but would be easily sorted with earplugs. One of our pitches (pitch 6) was very uneven and there is no overhead cover at the pot washing station which could be an issue in the rain.

Liked: Toilet / showers spotless, welcome fantastic, site beautiful and clean.
Peaceful and quiet. Children happily played together.
Wonderful sunsets. Wonderful clear skies at night, and fantastic views.
Mostly flat.

Disliked: As it is high up, it does get chilly at night so take something warm to wear while you're sitting out of your tent or caravan.
It is a very steep hill to walk down/up to Holmfirth town.

Local attractions

If you’ve ever seen the BBC programme Last of the Summer Wine, you’ll know the scenery of the Holme Valley and the stone cottages of Holmfirth – for this, goggleboxers, is where it was filmed. Compo, Clegg et al are immortalised in an exhibition up in Compo’s cottage. For a small town, Holmfirth has a fair bit going on all year round, including live music events, a film festival and an arts festival. Miles and miles of walks and bike rides in spectacular scenery are all around too, from pedalling or pottering around the Holme Valley to roaming around the Peak District four miles south from Holmfirth. If pottering, take the short walk around the woods of Digley Reservoir or go birdwatching at Blackmoorfoot Reservoir; if pedalling, tire your legs out on the climb to Holme Moss View Point, or stick to Route 68 and go south from Holmfirth to Dunford Bridge on the route’s Peak District section. Alternatively, travel northeast and northwest for day trips at the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors national parks, or dazzle in the bright lights of Manchester and Leeds, both about 20 miles away by car.
