  • Wild camping behind the Old George Inn in Sykehouse, South Yorkshire
  • Close to New Junction Canal; Yorkshire Wildlife Park 35 minutes’ drive
  • Food, drink and a beer garden on site; set on the Trans Pennine Trail
If there’s anything better than a bit of wild camping, it’s wild camping in the grounds of a pub, with food and drink on tap. The camping field behind the Old George Inn at Sykehouse, South Yorkshire, is once such excellent spot where you shouldn't have too much trouble keeping yourself fed and watered. Stretching to almost an acre, the flat field behind the pub has spacious pitches and plenty of room for kids to run around with a ball. It’s also set right on the coast-to-coast Trans Pennine Trail, making it a wonderful and welcoming overnight stop for long-distance hikers – as well as it being a pretty and peaceful place to linger for a few days. A note of warning: there is no electric hook-up at this site, although you can use the plugs to boost your phones when the pub is open. There's also a hairdryer in the shower and toilet block (and it's best to bring a torch for any nighttime manoeuvres…). Now back to that pub… Dog-friendly inside and out, the Old George serves up tasty menus and an assortment of craft drinks seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and evening dinners (food service finishes at 4.30pm on Sundays) served either in the cosy beamed interior or in the large, paved beer garden on warmer days.

Please note
  • Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.
  • At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.
  • Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.
  • Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.
  • Additional toilets are available during pub opening times (9.30am - 9.30pm). During colder months awnings will need to be pitched on the gravel and cars will need to be parked in the car park. As the site is adjoining the pub, please be aware there may be some noise from pub customers. Wifi is free but only available in the café, pub and beer garden; unfortunately it is not strong enough to reach the camping field and the site's rural location means the 4G signal is also weak.

Liked: Location and pub was nice. Very peaceful

Disliked: Advertised as having showers but unfortunately there was no hot water even in the sink

From the manager: Hi Tina. Apologies about the water, as you can tell it’s a very new toilet and shower block if you’d have let us know (by calling or popping in to us) we’d have checked it over and (hopefully) fixed it for you. I appreciate you expect hot water in the showers (as do we) but if it’s not reported to us we don’t know there’s an issue until we do our checks the next day xx the sink and the showers are all run from the same boiler, so if one isn’t working it will be the same for both xx

Unpowered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: We really loved the pub, the atmosphere and staff were so wonderful and welcoming. The toilets/showers were clean, well stocked and warm.

Disliked: The site was a bit waterlogged but between two rivers in February it was to be expected. Our pitch was lovely and not waterlogged.

Unpowered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: Easy to find, Nice level pitches, well laid out. Fantastic hosts and a really nice pub with a huge range of drinks and food. Had a few beers and a snack in the afternoon before returning for an evening meal. Even did amazing breakfasts. I must say that there are not many pubs that are privately run that have charm and such wonderful facilities remaining anymore and this is one to add to the list. I would guess that in the summer this place will be buzzing and cant wait to return.

Unpowered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: This was my second stay at Between Rivers Campsite and as before had a great peaceful stay. Didn’t use the facilities as I have my own. The pitches are very spacious and far away enough from the pub not to hear any noise. Will definitely be returning. Thankyou very much.

Route directions

From the M18 (Thorne junction), turn off the roundabout onto Selby Road. Do not take the left-hand turning onto Ferry Road, which leads onto Cowick Road and Fishlake, as it is not suitable for heavy or wide vehicles. Instead, continue for approximately one mile on Selby Road towards Snaith and take the next left (after going over a bridge) onto Between Rivers Lane. This leads into Sykehouse, where the site is located.

Local attractions

Sykehouse village is in a rural spot close to the New Junction Canal (20 minutes’ walk) where you can coarse fish for roach and carp, or stroll the towpath keeping your eyes peeled for kingfishers flitting about over the water. You can also get the hiking boots on to follow sections of the Trans Pennine Trail or take family walks on looped routes in Brockadale Nature Reserve (25 minutes’ drive). If you’re up for exploring by car, combine culture with exercise and stroll the contemporary installations at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (50 minutes). Go back in time with a poke around local stately piles like Wentworth Woodhouse (45 minutes, grand state apartments) and Brodsworth Hall and Gardens (half an hour, Victorian splendour). Children on board for the hols? Treat them to walking safaris bringing them (safely) up close to lions and tigers at Yorkshire Wildlife Park (35 minutes), or take younger kids to pet friendly sheep and Highland cows at Wigfield Farm (50 minutes). And you’re covered for rainy days as well, as you can divert to the interactive displays at Magna Science Adventure Centre (45 minutes).
