  • Dog-friendly wild camping site on a Peak District National Park farm
  • A five-minute drive to Ladybower Reservoir; 20 minutes to Stanage Edge
  • Pubs five minutes’ drive away and direct access to footpaths
You're going to want to put Moscar Cross Camping on your radar if you’re fishing for a wild camping break in the Peak District National Park, surrounded by reservoirs, pretty little villages and ample outdoor activities. Back to basics is the speciality at this working farm site, as is easy access to ultra-cool climbing crags like those on Stanage Edge, 20 minutes’ drive away, and hikes around the water at Ladybower Reservoir (five minutes’ drive) and Derwent Reservoir (15 minutes). Public transport, as you might expect, is pretty rare up here, so you’ll need your own form of transport to get around. What a time – you’re welcome to bring a barbecue, you see, and what better a place to grill veg or sausages than such a lush, green setting? There’s a shop for your greens, buns, meat and such in Low Bradfield village, 10 minutes’ drive away. As for your chunky pub chips, ales and other bites to eat, there are pubs within five minutes’ drive of the farm. With all of that to keep any hunger pangs at bay, you should feel bright and ready to tear up the mountain biking trails across the local moorlands. Your base is a working farm, remember, so there are footpaths that can be accessed directly from the site. Wild camping, of course, means that the only facilities at Moscar Cross Camping are portable toilets… leaving you free and easy to take a look around the pretty villages in the Hope Valley, hike Bradfield Valley before you return to civilisation in Sheffield (20 minutes’ drive) or wherever else you came from.

Local attractions

You’ll be well-served with a trusty pair of hiking boots or some sturdy trainers, what with all the ripe hiking grounds around. Make your way to big Peak District favourites like Mam Tor (25 minutes’ drive), Bamford Edge (five minutes) and Back Tor (15 minutes) in Hope Valley (10 minutes). String on your water gear for sailing on Damflask Reservoir (10 minutes). A picnic might be an essential if you’re planning on hiking around the shore too – you’re sure to find a splendid spot by the water to tuck into those sandwiches, after all. With Strines Moor and Strines Reservoir (10 minutes) nearby, there’s much more of that sort of thing around. All that’s likely to root you firmly in the present, but Chatsworth House (half an hour) turns back time a little. The 1600s mansion has huge grounds (just the place for more picnics), as well as lamb feeding experiences and other activities in the farmyard.
