  • Quiet camping on a small South Yorkshire equestrian farm
  • Conisbrough Castle 10 minutes' drive; Sheffield 30 minutes
  • Secure, gated site with CCTV off a quiet country lane
The Bunker, a small-scale campsite based in the green fields of a South Yorkshire equestrian centre, has a sought-after mix indeed: a quiet, rural location away from busy roads, it's also just a five-minute drive from the A1(M) motorway. Located just under a mile from the small village of Sprotbrough and roughly three miles from the centre of Doncaster, The Bunker is within easy walking distance of a butcher's shop, a wine bar, a coffee shop and a kids' play area. Sprotborough also gives access to the traffic-free path that runs along the river Don. Other places to explore locally like Cusworth Hall (five minutes' drive) and Conisbrough Castle (10 minutes) are within easy reach too. The Bunker is a simple site, with portable toilets available for guests. Barbecues are allowed here, and sometimes local produce is sold, so catering won't be an issue. Well-behaved dogs are welcome. The Bunker (appropriately enough, given the name) is a safe and secure site: the fields are gated and secured at night, and CCTV is in operation.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Arrived at the site, lots of threatening signage advising burglars should carry details of their next of kin, but decided from a distance that the place looked pretty peaceful. Called the number to obtain the code for the gate, no answer just a very rude voicemail message advising not to leave voicemail.
Text to advise at gate and need code, waited 20 minutes and had no response despite a couple more calls being made. Decided to go to a lovely fishing lake 15 minutes up the road for the night.
Site owner finally messaged back 3 hours later with the no code and no apology!

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Nice scenery, it all "looked" peaceful. I went for a walk to the River Don, brilliant place. A short walk to Cusworth Hall as well.
Toilet facilities with running water and soap.
May be nice for small groups to socialize, have a fire etc.

Disliked: There is a busy road nearby so all I could hear was car noises, also at night.
I struggled with opening and closing the gates to get to the toilet which was on a separate field nearby with sheep's grazing (not aligned properly, I could not really leave it open, I felt, which stressed me out). Unable to open the main gate (rusty bolt) so had to climb out and climb back in after the walk in the morning. I don't have lots of strength in my hands so others may be fine but it was a deal breaker for me.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: Lovely setting, very basic site (which is how I like them!), I saw from another review that there were only "portaloos" there so that's what I was expecting, but actually the loos were proper flushable ones, they kind you get at a posh wedding! They were very clean. The site was what I needed for a very peaceful night.

Disliked: Not being able to pay in full upfront. I didn't quite know where I could or could not pitch
