  • Wild-style camping with amenities 10 minutes’ drive from Warkworth
  • Druridge Bay Country Park 20 minutes’ drive; Craster 25 minutes
  • Local produce; communal fridge; firepits for hire and wood for sale
An excellent spot from which to explore the spectacular Northumberland coast (and the county’s equally spectacular countryside), family- and dog-friendly Walkmill Campsite is on the outskirts of the village of Warkworth (10 minutes’ drive or a leisurely 45-minute walk). Part of an eight-acre farm, this remote and blissfully peaceful site sits tantalisingly close to the River Coquet, though it should be noted that there is no direct access to the water. There are, however, several paths that take you within view of the riverbank, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. If you bide your time, you might spot the occasional salmon leaping out of the river or an inquisitive otter. Speaking of wildlife… the site’s large grassy area, surrounded by woodland, is a haven for hares and deer, and you can take pleasant strolls among colourful wildflowers. Walkmill Campsite is 'wild camping' with the benefit of limited clean facilities. These include a shower and two toilets in the on-site facilities and two external toilets housed in wooden huts. There are also two 'eco showers' as a refreshing alternative to the former shower, and portable toilets can also be hired by guests. The caravan acts as the site's reception area, complete with tourist information, charging points, a communal fridge-freezer and a small shop selling local produce. Firepits are available to hire, and wood and small wood briquettes are sold on site. Stock up on your favourite foods in Warkworth.

Top Circle unpowered grass site

Liked A very lovely site, each pitch felt very private and the landscaping was beautiful. I particularly appreciated the picnic benches dotted about, where you could catch the evening sun over dinner. Walkmill is very much an "In nature" experience, rather than serried rows of pitches. Facilities are perfectly adequate and always clean, it was a bit too chilly to try out the eco showers - next time maybe :-). Claire was friendly, helpful and always available if needed.
I would return in a heartbeat.

Thoroughly recommend staying here!

Crook of the River unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked Amazing site, so peaceful and the feeling of being in nature was amazing. The pitches are spacious - we stayed in the crook of the river and loved the pitches down there in particular, would Def book here again! Felt a bit like wild camping. Loads of bird song, saw a badger just off the drive one evening! Owners very helpful and friendly, overall a fantastic site!

Top Circle unpowered grass site

Liked What a beautiful site this is. Surrounded by glorious nature and birdsong with a river running past. So peaceful. The pitch was flat and spacious. It’s a fairly small site so imagine even if full it wouldn’t feel crowded. There are a few electric pitches too. The facilities are excellent. There’s a small static with 2 loos and a shower, a kitchen to boil the kettle and wash up, a TV room and also a small honesty shop with home made goodies and basic provisions. There’s also a couple of portaloos and two eco showers. The bell tent looked lovely. The owners are very welcoming and friendly. Felt very comfortable. This is somewhere I’m definitely planning to return to. Thank you for creating this wonderful site.

Route directions

If you are following Google Maps, please drive through Warkworth with the castle on your left. Google Maps tries to take drivers down Watershaugh Road and across the ford, which is not suitable for motorhomes or caravans and, depending upon river levels, cars too. There is a footbridge to the right of the ford for cyclists and walkers which is accessible from a narrow footpath against the hedgerow (at the last bend before you drop down to the river).

Local attractions

The village of Warkworth is a sweet little place. While history buffs explore the ruins of the 13th-century hilltop castle and riverside hermitage, wildlife enthusiasts can go on a puffin-spotting cruise to Coquet Island. Of course, you might just prefer to take it easy on Warkworth beach, a vast sandy stretch that is also popular for watersports. The landscape of Druridge Bay Country Park (20 minutes' drive) includes a dune-fringed beach (dotted with World War II defences), a boating lake and woodlands. Active types flock here to cycle, paddleboard and surf, but there is also plenty of birdwatching to be done, with swans among the winged residents. The dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle (25 minutes) sit atop a promontory stretching into the North Sea. From there, take a 25-minutes coastal walk to the fishing village of Craster, where you can sample the local speciality: smoked kipper.
