  • Pop-up site on a Northumberland farm on the outskirts of Morpeth
  • Belsay Hall 20 minutes’ drive; Northumberland Coast Path 25 minutes
  • Wild-style camping with basic facilities; pub within a half-hour walk
Surrounded by splendid countryside and forests laced with footpaths, West High House Farm Campsite is a good choice for those who are dipping their toes into the world of wild camping. With a water tap and a portable toilet on site, this family-friendly spot in Northumberland has that stripped-back vibe without being completely lacking in facilities. However, be aware that there is no electricity – and no lighting, either. On the plus side, this means that stargazing is a pretty remarkable experience here. Morpeth is five minutes’ drive away – or a half-hour walk, if you wish to go out in the evening (or the daytime…) for a drink at one of the market town’s many pubs (though the nearest boozer is actually only about a mile away). There are also several eateries in town, although barbecues are allowed at the site should you want to do your own cooking. Morpeth also has a golf club, a skatepark and a leisure centre with a pool. If you prefer wild swimming (and why not, you’re already wild camping), you can head to Cresswell beach (25 minutes’ drive), a large sandy stretch backed by dunes. Cresswell marks the start of the Northumberland Coast Path, which extends north for about 60 miles all the way to Berwick-upon-Tweed, taking in more spectacular beaches like Druridge Bay (25 minutes), nature reserves and ancient fortresses like Warkworth Castle (half an hour).

Local attractions

Spend a day at Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens (20 minutes’ drive). While the castle dates from the 1500s, the hall was built in the early 19th century by Sir Charles Monck, who filled it with columns and pillars so it would resemble an ancient temple. The grounds include vast parkland and the Quarry Garden, with a collection of exotic rhododendrons. On the site of a former colliery, Woodhorn Museum (25 minutes) explores Northumberland’s mining past. In addition to the old industrial buildings, the site features a collection of ornate mining banners, plus works by the so-called Pitmen Painters, whose art reveals what life was like for underground workers in the mid-20th century. Check out the coal and steelworks wagons, locomotives and assorted railroad vehicles on display at the Stephenson Steam Railway (25 minutes), then relive the olden days with a ride to the River Tyne aboard a heritage train.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Nice welcome. Everything we needed was there. But we left early as the noise from the motorway and the quiet hours not adhered to was a bit much for us.

Disliked: Noise everywhere.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Remoteness and surprisingly quiet even though close to the A1....

Disliked: Very sketchy dirt road lead up to it. If you have a low car you may struggle.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your review Andy, glad you enjoyed your stay. The stone road is generally resurfaced a couple of times a year and is due resurfacing. We also have another acre site located directly off High House road. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
