  • Spacious pitches in the grounds of a Northumberland village pub
  • A 10-minute drive from the A1 and east-coast beaches
  • Meals and drinks available Wednesday to Sunday; dogs and kids welcome
Plotting a stopover close to the A1, or perhaps in need of a nice rural spot to stay for a longer break spent exploring Northumberland’s countryside and coast? Either way, the pitches at the Railway Inn, on the edge of the village of Acklington, make a good pick – they’re spacious and set in two acres of tree-filled grounds for a pleasant and peaceful place to stay. Various handy facilities are provided – including electric hookups, a wifi connection and a bathroom block with separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers – and it’s all less than 10 minutes’ drive from the A1. On top of all this, of course, there’s the huge bonus that you’ll be staying in the grounds of a pub – and a lovely traditional pub at that, in a restored building whose roots date back to the early 19th century. It’s open from noon from Wednesday to Sunday, serving up a tasty menu of pub meals and local ales either inside or out in the beer garden. Dogs and kids are welcome, and there’s a playground on site to entertain the latter. This is a handy spot for simply spending the night before returning to your journey north or south, but it also makes a great base for a longer break – the coast is about 10 minutes' drive away, and lots of excellent locations (including Alnwick, Bamburgh and Warkworth) are within easy reach.

Liked: Food in the pub, pub staff really friendly and helpful!

Disliked: Everything else! Toilets are vile, 2 didn’t lock, snot all over walls, sick all over the lid. (We’re “cleaned” a few hours ago apparently”) The snot and sick were there for hours before!! Showers full of black mould, dirty old used bar of soap, holes kicked in the plastic walls. Kids running round screaming till late and then at 7am as well! Dog friendly site, but signs saying no dog walking!!?? Spoke to a few people on the site and they were all saying the same thing! My pitch neighbour left a day early! No wonder they don’t take full payment on the website, payment at the site so they can’t give refunds!! Also the amount of money they make on this site per night they could afford to gut the shower block and re do it really nice!

Liked: Good sized, level pitch. On site bar open 5 days a week.

Disliked: Very basic site, more perfectly suited for motor homes on a one or two night stay while travelling rather than an extended stay. Had to clear rubbish from our pitch when we arrived and grass and hedges were overgrown. Overgrown trees hanging down and hitting the top of the caravan all the time, which was very noisy at night. Advertised as having WiFi on site, but you couldn’t actually access it unless you were in the bar. No view or landscaping to make sitting outside pleasant, bearing in mind this site is at the top end of the charging scale. I didn’t use the onsite facilities but my husband did. He said they were basic, very tired and needed upgrading. We left a day early as we’d had enough.

Local attractions

Head east from the pub and you’ll hit the coast with a drive of 10 minutes or so. Once you’re there you can sign up for surf lessons in Amble, look out for birds at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre or wander through woods to hit the sand dunes at Druridge Bay Country Park. Looking a little further along the coast, there’s a nice long beach and a golf course in Warkworth (10 minutes' drive) and a couple of splendid seafront castles in Dunstanburgh (25 minutes) and Bamburgh (35 minutes). Holy Island (45 minutes) is another lovely place to visit, with lots of wildlife as well as an ancient priory and Lindisfarne Castle – don’t forget, access is via a causeway that’s inaccessible at high tide. Away from the coast, you can take a tour of Alnwick Castle (15 minutes) – a particular treat for Harry Potter fans – or take the kids to meet the animals at Northumberland Zoo (15 minutes). National Trust - Cragside (25 minutes) is a nice place for a gentle wander; for something more challenging, head to the trails of Northumberland National Park (35 minutes).
