  • Peaceful Northumberland site with views over the Tyne Valley
  • Hadrian’s Wall 10 minutes’ drive; Newcastle 35 minutes
  • Disposable barbecues welcome; firepits to hire
With a privileged location between the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the south and Northumberland National Park to the north (and easy to access from the A69), Sunniside House is a peaceful site about a mile (15 minutes’ walk) from the small village of Acomb. There are excellent views from nearly every angle here, including far-reaching vistas over the surrounding Tyne Valley and out to the Pennine peaks beyond. Facilities at this simple, rural Northumberland site include a shower, toilets, a washing-up area and a communal fridge; and a limited number of pitches ensures that everyone has sufficient breathing space. You may be able to help the farmers feed the lambs on site (in spring only), or perhaps you’d like to delve into centuries of local history, whether it’s hitting Hadrian’s Wall for rambles along the old Roman frontier (10 minutes’ drive, or a two-mile hike) or checking out the small church of St. Oswald’s in Lee, named after King Oswald of Northumbria, winner of the seventh-century Battle of Heavenfield, which may have taken place at Chollerford (10 minutes), just across the River North Tyne. After your exploration, it’s back to base to freshen up, then off to the popular local pub (about a mile away) for a pint and a home-cooked meal. Disposable barbecues are welcome, if you’d rather eat on site, but they are only allowed in designated areas, while firepits can be rented. Packs of kiln-dried wood, kindling and firelighters are available to buy. Please do not bring your own fuel.

What customers say

Great views and a warm welcome! Well-kept pitches, some hardstanding with tables. Clean, adequate facilities including a communal fridge. Handy for Hadrian's Wall and Hexham. Minor slopes and a few mentions of no hot washing-up water.

Valley View unpowered grass tent site

Liked Absolutely stunning views and very friendly hosts.
Quiet camp, family friendly, basic facilities but very charming and all ‘home-made’. Close enough to amenities & transport links but far from the crowds.
Parking is separate from the pitch, but a handy on-site trolley made setting up easy.

Disliked Tent camping was on a slight slope, slid down the tent somewhat in the night.

Pennine View unpowered mixed motorhome site

Liked Location and hosts + mum
Pitch was okay, private
Quietness and the rules.

Disliked Not disliked but bit unfortunate: the amazing view from the tent pitches is blocked by bushes in the campervan area.

Valley View unpowered grass tent site

Liked We had a great camping holiday here with our Grandchildren, basic but good clean facilities, very friendly and good location to be based for Hexham , Hadrian's wall visits and surrounding area. Very picturesque location and dark sky at night. We liked the 'no cars' in the camping area rule making it safer for the children to do their own thing.

Valley View unpowered grass tent site

Liked Beautiful site and views. Really friendly, family-run. Lovely clean facilities, 3 flushing toilets, 2 showers (at busy times), spacious clean sink for washing dishes, well organised and maintained rubbish disposal. Site was quiet with clear rules stating no amplified sound.

Disliked Nothing. Except that holidays have to end someday…
Some pitches are slightly sloping but we arrived in good time and got a pretty flat spot.

Valley View unpowered grass tent site

Liked The views, very handy for Acmob and Hexht

Disliked Not enough parking
The owners are very strict on rules especially parking beyond the sign even if there's no available space. Also petty rules about tying guy ropes to fences.

Local attractions

A military settlement that later developed into a thriving frontier town, Corbridge Roman Town - Hadrian’s Wall (10 minutes’ drive) is home to the ancient remains of barracks, temples and storage facilities. An on-site museum displays some of the items recovered as part of the Corbridge Hoard, such as delicate figurines. Elegant country mansions in the area include National Trust - Wallington (half an hour), which dates back to the 17th century and is filled with pre-Raphaelite paintings and assorted art objects. Its expansive grounds include vast swathes of woodland crossed by the River Wansbeck. The Discovery Museum in Newcastle (35 minutes) showcases scientific and technological advances made in the region, from Joseph Swan’s first lightbulb to George Stevenson’s steam engine. Stop at Grainger Market to stock up on foodstuffs, then cross the iconic Tyne Bridge to reach the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, housed in a refurbished flour mill.
