  • Small, peaceful and traditional site on a working Yorkshire Dales farm
  • A 25-minute drive from Barnard Castle; 10 minutes from bicycle hire
  • Two pubs within walking distance; off-ground barbecues permitted
Taking some time out in the Yorkshire Dales National Park? A scoop of peace, a dash of rural scenery and a nice sprinkle of walking trails are some of the ingredients at Pepper Hall Campsite in Arkengarthdale. This small, traditional site has a tasty stay on a working farm in the national park, 25 minutes’ drive away from Barnard Castle. This is a scenic spot with Swaledale sheep and beef cattle surrounding the site and walks straight from the site, either up onto the traditional Grouse moor or down into the valley bottom along the Arkle beck. Cycling is another popular pastime here, as there’s bicycle hire for the dales 10 minutes’ drive away. To get to the site, you’ll have to cross over a shallow ford with a small stream on foot, using the stepping stones. There’s a private running water supply on site, and aside from that, there's a toilet a short walk away from the camping pitches. You also have permission to set up an off-ground barbecue (as long as it's not too hot, dry or windy). Traditional ales and good food may be your first port of call. Handily, Langthwaite village is well-known for its pub five minutes’ walk away, which was rebuilt after floods and now has some great grub and drinks. There’s another pub 15 minutes’ walk away with a warm welcome and food. There are a couple more cheery towns or villages around, including Reeth (10 minutes’ drive for a shop, playground and museum) and Richmond (a historic town, half an hour away).

What customers say

A remote, beautiful spot with stunning views. Perfect for walkers, but facilities are basic (one toilet, a bit of a trek). Some love the charm, others suggest better signage/access in wet weather. Friendly owners and nearby pubs are big pluses.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Loved the site, loved the location, loved the toilet which is not too far despite other comments. There is a great pub which is a ten minute walk from the site. We both loved it and will be back.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked This is the second time I've stayed here. The people who own the place are genuinely helpful and nice. I love the setting, and how simple the campsite is, and generally how few people use it!

Disliked Unfortunately, through no fault of the site owners, there were 2 idiots the night we were there who stayed up drinking until midnight being really loud and disturbing. I've chap even moved his tent away from them at 11.30pm. The sad fact is that every time I've not enjoyed a campsite it's always been due to people drinking, staying up late and being so loud that it disturbs everyone else. You never like to go and tell them to be quiet for the risk they turn nasty or abusive. I'm not sure what site owners could do to stop this kind of thing happening, other than banning alcohol (they did enforce the barbecue ban so maybe its not such a wild idea). But it's my biggest dread when booking any campsite, and unfortunately it was realised this time.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Beautiful views over the Dale. No traffic noise can be heard from the camping field, so very peaceful. Easy to walk to both The Red Lion, and The CB Inn. Farmer and his wife were both really nice and friendly when they popped round to check if everything was OK. Hope your daughters wedding goes well in this beautiful setting!
Will definitely return.

Disliked Nothing to dislike about the campsite.
Did have a run in with our German neighbours who thought that they had rights to the whole field, but the site itself was spot on.
