Summer camping at castle howard lakeside holiday park
Located near castle howard where you can visit the house and gardens

  • Well-maintained site with views over Castle Howard's Great Lake
  • Half an hour's walk or a five-minute drive from Castle Howard
  • Fishing and dog-walking area on site; close to a café and farm shop
Pitching up by a lake's a plus in more ways than one – as well as being an instant de-stresser, waterside surrounds can be a prime spot for fishing and, in the summer, ever-so-soothing boat trips. If you like the sound of that, hotfoot it down to Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park for views over Yorkshire’s poshest country estates. Fancy a stroll close to the water's edge? Go and seek out sweet and savoury goodies at the nearby café and farm shop (a mile away from site) – the latter can rustle up a nifty breakfast or barbecue pack that you can pick up on your arrival. There is also a shop on site selling a few essentials and lots of treats. Pick up a pint of milk, a bottle of wine, meat from the Castle Howard butcher or a tasty cake on site. The site's non-watery parts are also pretty splendid – this family-friendly park has a dedicated dog-walking area where you can admire mature trees while the pups and/or youngsters let off a little steam. It's also got handy practical features like smart loos and showers and a laundry room. Though there's plenty of scope for sticking to the estate during your time here (especially if you're visiting during one of the high-season concert weekends), active off-site jaunts around the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty come highly recommended, too – the surrounding area's full of cycle paths, bridleways and hiking trails.

What customers say

Great spot by the lake, close to Castle Howard. Friendly staff, clean facilities, and roomy pitches are a hit. Peaceful vibe, but busy times can mean crowds and some noise. Limited phone signal and no shop. Most would come back!

Liked Plenty of space, nice staff
Good showers, just right temperature

Disliked Toilets bit dirty early am, before cleaning,
Can't believe what some people are like!

From the manager: Many thanks Rob. It's a shame that nowadays respect for other people and property is lacking isn't it? Thank you for appreciating that the problem was not of our making.

Liked Lovely campsite, friendly staff. It wasn’t very busy when we arrived so plenty of space to choose our pitch. Very helpful, as our pump was broken for the air beds and the staff lent us one to complete our set up. Toilets and showers were clean. Kitchen area to wash pots, and a freezer available for any ice packs. Lovely walk by the lake with a great view of the castle. Plenty of places a short drive away if you’re looking for days out.

Disliked Nothing

Powered concrete slab caravan site

Liked Flat pitch, good location , receptionist friendly

Disliked Toilets and facilities inadequate , smelly and filthy … same rubbish on floor immediately after ‘deep clean’ had been carried out… lack of any staff presence outside office hours means noisy at night … priority is clearly mobile home site . Shop is really only selling expensive Castle Howard products …eg £2.40 for 6 eggs that’s greed . First time after a month away in N Yorks did I feel need to lock van at night as campsite did not feel safe. Dog faeces on pitch, around loos and around site … yes that’s campers but who checks if no presence.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review Lakeside Linda. We are naturally very disappointed with your comments and your rating. When comparing your review to the reviews by other guests staying at the same time as yourself it sounds like a completely different site. The site during your mid-week booking, was relatively quiet for the last week of the summer holiday. None of the team had any reports of noise, security issues or dog dirt on site.
Our shop, which was added last year and has been a popular addition, is a small convenience store which stocks a few luxuries and a few necessities many of which are reasonably priced. If needed, there are supermarkets just five miles away in Malton.
Our touring visitors are just as important to us as the holiday home owners and therefore we are saddened that you didn't call in to reception before leaving early to inform us of any problems you had experienced; had we been allerted we would have done our utmost to get the problems resolved quickly and perhaps you may have stayed to enjoy the rest of your time here.

Powered grass site

Liked The staff were so friendly and helpful. The surroundings are lovely, the site has everything you need.

It is clean and tidy, shop well stocked snd close to everything we needed.

Disliked Some of the other campers left a lit to be desired. Digs roaming loose and doing tgeur business (i understand this hapoens, but at least clean it up) and one very noisy group.

Dhame as this was not the camps fault.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hello Vicky, We are saddened to learn that the behaviour of some campers was unacceptable during the Bank Holiday weekend. Selfish and disrepectful campers are not welcome here. We do appreciate being told. Any anonymous evidence is welcome and can help us to identify the group so that we can refuse them a pitch in the future and ask them to leave if necessary. Our security team do visit at night but we shall ask them to be extra viligent especially on busy weekends. A member of staff had approached them before they departed and found them to be exceedingly rude. It is not what anyone wants. Thankfully this is a rare occurance at Lakeside. On the positive side we are pleased that the site, the location and the team met your approval and we look forward to welcoming you back one day.

Local attractions

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river. Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars). Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
