  • Peaceful site with secluded pitches near three wild swimming lakes
  • A 15-minute drive to central York, and 30 minutes to Castle Howard
  • Use of swimming lakes included in all stays; dark skies area
Pool Bridge Farm is home to a large six-acre grass site lined with ancient oak trees. Even though you’re in the middle of the countryside, it is only a 15-minute drive from historic York and all its museums, restaurants and riverside walks. There are three lakes for wild (open-water) swimming, which is free for all guests from arrival to departure. Lakeside saunas (open from Thursday to Sunday and on bank holidays) must be booked separately. Make your way to the on-site café (open from Thursday to Sunday, as well as bank holidays). As the site is a mini nature reserve dedicated to preserving local wildlife, guests also have the chance to spot barn owls and kestrels feeding next to the site. Thanks to the lack of light pollution, the site is in a dark-skies area. You can be pottering around Rievaulx Abbey or living it up among the bright lights of York, but on a sunny evening, do try to get back to base at nightfall to indulge in a spot of stargazing while cosied up around your firepit. Modern amenities include a well-maintained toilet and shower block a few minutes' walk from the pitches via a path along the bank of one of the swimming lakes, so take in the scenery as you stroll to the facilities (best bring a torch too).

Meadow unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked: Loved the camping meadow, not many tents so very spacious and private. Incredible lakes and very laid back atmosphere.

Disliked: Lack of and distance to toilet/shower block. Portaloos only near campsite, which weren’t great, but building work in progress for new shower block, so definitely coming back!

Meadow unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked: Liked everything! What a wonderful place PBF is! I could have stayed a week….and certainly plan to do so next time. The field was very big and very quiet with ample toilet facilities that you were confident was not going to run out of toilet roll etc. Only a short walk to the beautiful lakes, changing huts, saunas, café, and everything else on offer. I frequently saw stuff around and they always spoke and answered all questions, and we’re happy to help. The whole place has such a family friendly vibe and is excellent value for money. I’ll definitely be going back more than once.

Disliked: The only thing to dislike is that I don’t live nearer so I could go more often!!

Meadow unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked: The meadow is huge so there was no noise from surrounding guests. The location with four swimming lakes walking distance from the meadow is amazing and we'd certainly return to swim again. We booked via Pitchup which was smooth and the price for camping includes swimming.

Disliked: No one asked us about our booking details or took names etc. There is a new toilet block being constructed so portaloos were available. These were in a very poor condition, with a nappy blocking one of them. The showers are quite far from the meadow and were not clean when we arrived at 6pm and the loos there had no toilet paper in.

Meadow unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked: Amazing place. Great massive and lovely field for quiet camping and room for kids to play and explore. The lakes are brill - both more tranquil adult ones, and kid friendly ( it still beautiful ) Q lake. Great cafe, fire pits, friendly staff. Kids loved it. Definitely return.

Disliked: Big trek to potable water, showers and wash basin. Appreciate new block is being added, but at least a closer tap would have been good.

Liked: Amazing location. The lakes were magical. Lakeside sauna was excellent. A truly special place for outdoor swimming and paddleboarding. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Portaloos. Lacking toilet/shower facilities but they are building new ones. Only 2 showers, no hooks in showers.

Meadow unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked: Beautiful swimming lakes but not a wild swimmer especially as was seasonably cold

Disliked: Lack of showers and dishwashing facilities and very far from pitch, portaloos only nearby and were smelly by end of weekend, had to drive to fill water containers as so far away

Local attractions

You can cycle into York (30 minutes by bike) along a bridleway accessed from the farm – there’s also a regular bus service passing the farm entrance. Stroll around Roman walls, tour the Gothic Minster and check out the locomotives in National Railway Museum York. Have a flutter at York Racecourse (both 15 minutes’ drive) and spend all your winnings in the designer boutiques at Designer Outlet York (10 minutes). Alternatively, head off into the North York Moors National Park (50 minutes) for biking and walking over glorious moorland – to add an architectural element to your rambles, wander around the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey (50 minutes) or explore follies and temples in the landscaped grounds at Castle Howard (30 minutes). If you’ve got kids on board, Jorvik Viking Centre is a top spot for its immersive tour around a replica Viking village (complete with smells), or you can book tasting sessions at York’s Chocolate Story (both 15 minutes). Older kids might love ghost tours of night-time streets, but younger children should probably stick to the cute goats and mini-train rides at Piglets Adventure Farm (20 minutes).
