  • Small family-run campsite on a Ryedale farm in rural North Yorkshire
  • A 40-minute drive to York and 15 to the North York Moors National Park
  • Pop-up pitches on meadows; shops and pubs five minutes’ drive
A stay at Nawton Grange Camping and Caravan Park means you have all the benefits of being surrounded by glorious North Yorkshire countryside to discover, and yet you’re still within striking distance of ancient York (40 minutes’ drive), should you fancy a chance of pace and scenery. A small, family-run campsite on a farm with cattle and horses grazing peacefully in neighbouring fields, Nawton Grange offers camping on level fields surrounded by the forested hills of Ryedale, which takes in the foodie towns of Malton and Pickering and the scenic Howardian Hills. Access to the camping fields is down a driveway off a quiet rural lane, and there is plenty out space around the pitches for kids (and well-behaved dogs) to have a runaround with a ball in safety. If you need to pick up bits for a barbecue back at your tent, you have a massive choice of local produce at Beadlam Grange Farmshop and Tea Room (five minutes’ drive); you can also stroll down to Nawton village (20 minutes’ walk) to a pub offering good food and a takeaway service.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked When we arrived we pretty much had the pitch to ourselves which was nice. By the time we left the field was nearly full (it’s a shall some of the new visitors were abit noisy early hours). The facilities were clean and tidy. Location was nice as it’s a short drive into hemsley. The owner greeted us when we arrived and she was friendly and answered our questions. The kids enjoyed seeing the horses. We didn’t go into the cowshed (bar) so can’t comment on that.

Disliked Unfortunately the noise spoilt the stay a little for us. As stated in other reviews the constant barking of the nearby dogs disturbed our sleep. To top it off the first night we were unluckily enough to have the farmer in the field next door harvesting until about 11pm. There is also something near the facilities (a generator/pump?) making a constant clanking noise. Also had to clear up abit of dog that was near where we pitched up. Wi-Fi was slow and kept dropping out and we were close to the entrance

From the manager: Hi thank you for your feed back
I believe you were the guys that were first time campers.
when your staying in a tent there is no sound proofing so you pretty much here everything so you are going to hear people talking .
Unfortunately you are coming to the countryside and the farmers need to crack on to get the harvest in before the weather breaks so it was just unfortunate that it was the night you stayed with us.
apologies for the dog muck this does happen from time to time maybe the owner did not see there dog do its business which is why we ask for dogs to be on leads at all times .
thanks jenny

Local attractions

Outdoor enthusiasts can look forward to fishing (five minutes), walking and cycling in the North York Moors National Park (15 minutes), rock climbing on sandstone crags at Highcliffe Nab (an hour) or sailing at Scaling Dam (40 minutes). Keen gourmets pick up treats in the delis of Malton (25 minutes) – anything from rhubarb-and-custard ice cream to macaroons and locally reared cuts of meat for the barbecue. Other pretty market towns include Helmsley (10 minutes), packed with pubs and indie shops, and Pickering (20 minutes) where you can board a vintage train for chugs across wild moorland to Whitby on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. For a taste of local history, have a wander among the romantic ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, and then see them from above at National Trust - Rievaulx Terrace (both 15 minutes). Castle Howard (20 minutes) has elegant John Vanbrugh-designed rooms fun of priceless furniture to nose around, and of course York (40 minutes) is home to a famous minister, lots of museums and cobbled medieval streets.
