  • Small adults-only site for CAMC members only on a family-run farm
  • A five-minute drive from Castle Howard and 25 minutes from York
  • Pub, café and Yorkshire Coastliner bus stops within walking distance
Better keep your camera handy for this adults-only site in North Yorkshire. The touring pitches at Greets Farm Certified Location, for Caravan and Motorhome Club members only, are surrounded by green fields on a family-run farm. When you come back home, your camera roll will likely be full of sunsets, sheep grazing in the neighbouring fields and the views towards Castle Howard in the distance. Staying here places you within the Howardian Hills National Landscape, around five minutes' drive from the stately home of Castle Howard, 20 minutes from the North York Moors National Park and 45 minutes from Yorkshire coast highlights like Filey and Scarborough. Keeping your fingers crossed for good walking opportunities? You have it here; the national landscape is criss-crossed with footpaths and bridleways that'll keep you busy for hours on end. Rural Greets Farm Certified Location may be, but guests here are by no means cut off from good food, public transport and local attractions. It’s a 20-minute (one-mile) walk into the village of Welburn, where there’s a dog-friendly pub with a beer garden and an artisan bakery and café for your morning caffeine fix and a warm pastry. Exploring by bus is also well within the realm of possibilities, as the Yorkshire Coastliner bus stops of Crambeck and Welburn Lodge are both a short walk away from base; just take care crossing the busy A64. Back on the two-acre site, there's the convenience of an amenities block with a flushing loo, shower, washing-up area and a water point. The site is spread across two acres and has been welcoming guests for over 15 years. It’s a very friendly sort of place.

Route directions

What3words: submits.changes.existance. From the main A64, take the sign 'Welburn and Castle Howard' and after approximately 400 yards, start indicating left at the signs for the vet's practice 'equine entrance'. Turn left up the tarmac road, adjacent to the vet's 'small animal entrance'. For the campsite, veer right up the stoned track and follow it around past the stables and then up the slight incline into the large field. If travelling from the Castle Howard direction, please be aware of narrow archways on The Stray, measuring 2.6m x 3.43m. The site is a mile through Welburn village – beware double-parked cars near the pub – travelling towards the main A64.

Local attractions

Don’t just visit Castle Howard (five minutes’ drive) for its Baroque rooms and lush landscaped gardens. It also has an arboretum with a growing family of red squirrels. If the stately home looks curiously familiar, it’s probably because you’ve seen it on your TV. It’s always a good idea to have a plan for when hunger pangs strike, and the market town of Malton (10 minutes) will definitely do. Considered Yorkshire’s food capital by many folks, it has plenty of eateries, independent shops and regular food events. On its outskirts is the Eden Camp Modern History Museum (10 minutes), a former prisoner-of-war camp with real tanks and other memorabilia to look at. And where else might you want to go? York (25 minutes) is often a top pick for guests here, possible by bus or car, with its old city walls, medieval streets and chocolate shops. To inject some purple into your day, head to the Yorkshire Lavender farm in Terrington (10 minutes). Tasting oysters in Whitby (55 minutes) is another possibility.
