  • Peaceful rural site on a 120-acre working farm in Sinnington
  • On the edge of the North York Moors under an hour's drive from York
  • Walking trails around the farm for gorgeous Ryedale views
If you're the sort whose ideal rural break features not only heaps of peaceful space and gorgeous views but also a pub within walking distance and a bare minimum of narrow lanes to negotiate, Cliff Farm Holidays could well be the one for you. Access to this North Yorkshire site is pleasingly easy – just take a very short detour off the A170 and you'll be rewarded with 120 acres of working arable and beef farm. There’s stunning scenery at every turn, and the folk here have made the most of their Ryedale views by setting up walking trails around the farm leading to some of the prettiest corners. Walking’s also a great way to get to the nearest pub, a mere 15-minute stroll away in Sinnington, or to take in the trails of the North York Moors National Park, whose boundaries are a mile or so away. To grab a fish supper or stock up for your evening barbecue, it's a 10-minute drive to Pickering’s shops, supermarket and chippie. Days out can be any combo of coast, country and city that you fancy concocting: the seaside’s 45 minutes’ drive away at Scarborough, and York's historic streets are just under an hour away. Stately homes, animal park, heritage train rides and adventure parks are all in the local area, too. Facilities on site include a toilet block with showers and an accessible/family bathroom, a laundry room and a covered washing-up area. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you but must be on a lead at all times; there’s a dog run and mess bin provided.

Power optional gravel caravan site

Liked: A lovely working farm. Lots of animals to see. Quiet site. Owner came over to show us our pitch . The shower and toilet area very clean and modern. But only 2 showers. We really enjoyed our stay.

Disliked: Not really a dislike but did the walking route attached to the farm as it was by side of field could be quite uneven and red route came to dead end as overgrown.

Liked: Arrived at site, well signposted off a170 with good access road to site.good signage to reception area and booked in quickly. Site owner took us to pitch and helped site van and explained electrical hook up as metered. Pitched are hand standing with adjacent grassed area, ours had its own picnic bench.Pitches are a good size but chocks were needed. As described this is a working farm so plenty of noises and smells but site area was extremely clean and tidy with new reception block being finished off and a shed for information leaflets etc. Toilet and shower block was exceptionally clean with great controllable showers....makes a nice change😂 Good central base for exploring the north Yorkshire moors and coast.village of sinnington just a short walk...about 15mins...good quality food and beer. Worth a visit.

Liked: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Barn at Cliff Farm and I can't say there was anything that bothered me. The family and staff were so friendly and helpful and my kids and I had a great time learning a bit about, and being surrounded by farm life, including lots of info from the resident guinea pig expert children on the farm! The accommodation was lovely and goes beyond glamping in my opinion. Affordable, but really well kitted out, comfy and full of character, being revamped stone and timber. I felt really at ease in the surroundings, happily let the children roam a bit. Even my dog enjoyed meeting the resident farm dogs and spying on the livestock nearby with eager eyes. We enjoyed a brief reccy on our bikes on the farm trails, though my youngest is only four so it wasn't as long a ride as I'd have enjoyed for the exploration. We managed a day trip to the beach (Cayton Bay) which was a bit of a drive, but given we were on holiday, very do-able. We also spent a day in Dalby Forest which, if you like some rugged off-grid country, will be right up your street. The children loved the Gruffalo Orienteering challenge and the lovely play parks. There seem to be a lot of other activities and sites very close to the farm I'd have tried had we been there longer. Shops are easily accessible in Pickering and it was easy to cater from there. If we're back in that part of the country again I will definitely hope to book the Barn for the family again. Many thanks to everyone!

Power optional gravel caravan site

Liked: Second stay here, we really enjoy how quiet this site is. It’s near one of our favourite villages Helmsley, and it’s easy access to other villages like Pickering where you can get the steam train to Whitby. Nice smaller site, ideal as we travelled without the children. Showers are lovely and hot and the site is well maintained. Will visit again.

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: Lovely little barn, very clean. Really friendly owners. On a working farm so you should expect to hear and smell animals at times, we loved that, but if that is not something you like then this site is not for you. Really relaxing would definitely recommend.

Local attractions

Get set for action – there’s a whole heap of countryside antics to be had in the surrounds. The North York Moors National Park is a mile way, with all manner of trails for walkers and cyclists to roam along, and other activities including rock climbing, caving and abseiling. Those who’d like to trot around on horseback need only stroll up to Sinnington for a stables with pony rides, lessons and rural hacks. A top pick for those with a daredevil streak is Dalby Forest (25 minutes' drive), home to a Go Ape adventure park and mountain bike centre. For something a little more leisurely, take a stately stroll around Castle Howard or steam through the scenery on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway; both are about half an hour away. Something for the small sorts? Take a foray around Flamingo Land theme park and zoo (15 minutes) or see the big birds in action at the National Centre for Birds of Prey (20 minutes). Stacks of seaside frolics are 45 minutes away in Scarborough, and there's plenty to see in York (50 minutes) too.
