  • Family-run campsite between Northallerton and Thirsk, North Yorkshire
  • North York Moors 20 minutes’ drive; Lightwater Valley 25 minutes
  • Well-maintained camping on a small farm; shops 10 minutes’ drive
Torn between the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors? Book a pitch at Greystone Cottage Farm in the village of Maunby, and there’s no need to make any difficult decisions. You have easy access to both national parks from the site’s handy location between the market towns of Northallerton and Thirsk, and fantastic views across the Vale of York to Sutton Bank are an added bonus. This is a small campsite with grass pitches on a working farm, and when you’re exploring you’re likely to meet free-range chickens, curious goats and horses – especially Biscuit the (mini) pony, likely to become a firm favourite with kids. While dogs are more than welcome, please respect the livestock and keep them under control at all times. Pick up everything you need in Thirsk (10 minutes’ drive) supermarkets if you’re going to spark up the barbecue (bring your own please). Otherwise head for the local village pub, which does a good line in traditional eat-in or takeaway dishes plus a range of local cask ales, ciders and lagers. One last thing: this is nearly wild camping with no fuss or frills; there is a communal fridge-freezer and a loo block but no hot water. Please also bring torches for finding your way around after dark.

What customers say

Awesome family-run farm campsite. Spotless loos, ample space, farm animals a hit! Sam, the owner, is a legend – super friendly and helpful. Minor quibbles about no showers or animal noise, but loads rave and will be back!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Sam is an excellent host and site is very well looked after. The pitches are number allocated, with a container with 2 x toilets, a sink area for washing pots and a communal fridge freezer and notice board. You can also hire fires, buy logs and marshmallows for an extra little treat. It's a quiet area with just the sound of the farm animals and happy customers to keep you company. We're a couple and there were a mixture of different aged couples, tents, motorhomes, tentboxes and families with older and younger children, with plenty of space to play. Great location for us exploring various Heritage sites amongst other attractions. We will definitely be returning. Thanks for a lovely stay xx

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Myself and my family (partner and 2 young sons) we had the best time at Greystone Cottage Farm.

We enjoyed looking at the animals daily (horses, donkeys, goats and hens/chickens) and chatting to people on site including the owners and their children.. everyone was so lovely!
Watching the sunset and shooting stars at Nighttime with the campfire and eating marshmallows!

The facilities were always kept cleaned and stocked up with toilet roll, soap etc.

The owners work really hard to give you the best experience.. anything you may need or have any questions they were always there to help!

We will definitely be using this site again in the future ❤️

Powered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked I’ve just had 3 nights at this amazing site and it’s set the bar very high now, converting me from bigger sites with more facilities.

The site has 2 toilets which are very clean and spacious and a washing up area. The water isn’t hot but you don’t really need this for a shorter stay.

Pitches are big, flat and spacious and some have EHU. It was lovely to see the animals and Sam was always around to speak or help, without being imposing, lovely relaxed attitude. You get a text beforehand with your pitch and some instructions which is very good too.

There’s only two fields here so it’s very small and peaceful which I liked and in a great location. Thirsk is very close by to pick up food/essentials and you can venture out to the attractions or National Trust sites. On our last night there were only 4 pitches in use which was just the best!

I would definitely come back here time and time again. Please note there aren’t any showers but the site do tell you all this explicitly before you book.

Disliked Nothing - such a great experience and my best one to date.

Local attractions

Kids with you? Keep them happily entertained with raptor displays at Thirsk Birds of Prey Centre (five minutes’ drive), or watching the antics of the meerkats at Thorp Perrow - Arboretum and Bird of Prey & Mammal Centre. The family can easily spend the day at Lightwater Valley Family Adventure Park (both 25 minutes), with its gentle rides for younger guests and hair-raising rollercoasters for those of a braver disposition. The North York Moors National Park (20 minutes) has several major attractions close by, including Sutton Bank White Horse, first carved into the steep hillside in 1857 and looking over the Vale of York. The ornately arched remains of Rievaulx Abbey (both half an hour) have a spectacular valley setting, and equally gorgeous Castle Howard (45 minutes) is open for tours of lavish apartments and parkland packed with follies and fountains. Drop by The World of James Herriot to see where the universe’s best-loved vet once lived in Thirsk (10 minutes), and then carry on into the Yorkshire Dales National Park (40 minutes) to see where the TV series in which he stars, ‘All Creature Great and Small’ is filmed in Grassington (an hour).
