  • Dog-friendly Yorkshire Dales site five minutes’ drive from Skipton
  • Embsay Station 10 minutes’ drive; Harrogate 35 minutes
  • Pub serving food; play area; year-round family events; launderette
Hiking, golfing and a thriving restaurant scene in nearby Skipton (five minutes’ drive across the A59) make Tarn House Caravan Park a pretty sweet spot for a holiday in North Yorkshire. The family-friendly site sits on the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales, so the walkers and ramblers in your midst should have plenty to be cheerful about, with places like Embsay Crag and Skipton Moor no more than 10 minutes’ drive away. And golfers will likely be happier still, with a driving range within walking distance (10 minutes) and an 18-hole course (where they also run beginners’ lessons) within a five-minute drive. After a day on the putting green, scrambling up the Dales or walking your dog (a welcome guest here) through gorgeous woodland, you can chill out by sinking into a comfortable leather sofa at the elegant on-site pub, which serves delicious pizzas and local ales. Children, meanwhile, might be making new friends on the swings and see-saws in the play area. Tarn House also has a calendar of events, ranging from live music bands and comedy performances to children’s activities. A shop sells locally produced foodstuffs; in addition to a modern, heated toilet/shower block (with facilities for disabled guests), the site also has a launderette.

Fully-serviced gravel and concrete caravan site

Liked: The facilities were excellent and mostly clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was very good. The grounds were well maintained. It was a fully serviced pitch, which was great. They are super dog friendly and dogs can even go in the restaurant if they are well behaved. They have dog parking bays and a dog shower with hot water. Absolutely fabulous.

Disliked: Although everything was on the face of things clean there was dirt in the inconspicuous places and plenty of spider webs in wall corners, ceilings, light fitting and by the door hinges. (Sorry don’t like spiders). I will say some of the campers left the potash dirty (not the park’s fault). Even though the website says wifi available, it is only at the top of the park at the offices. Thankfully we travel with our own wifi router.

Fully-serviced gravel and concrete caravan site

Liked: A welcome pack was emailed and they rang in advance to let me know what pitch we would be on and give directions, which made arriving really easy. The touring pitches are very close to the shower/loo/dishwasher block. The road into the site was a ‘proper’ road, no country tracks to navigate with a caravan. When we booked in at reception we’d booked with dogs and they had some information for us that included dog friendly taxi numbers, which was a lovely touch. We didn’t use the food on site but it looked nice and had a dog friendly section. The pitch was full service, large and had grass and hard pitch so we had grass to put the awning on if we wanted and lots of space between pitches including a young hedge. Really beautiful location and vibe. We were only staying here as a stop over to Scotland and were sad we weren’t staying longer!

Disliked: The free WiFi was at the top of the site around reception it doesn’t reach the touring pitches.

Camping pod

Liked: The glamping pod was cosy and even had a tv. The facilities were v close and the showers were excellent and warm with heated floors. The lady on reception was v welcoming and helpful. There was a pub selling food on site and the pizzas were v authentic. I would definitely recommend this site close to Skipton.

Disliked: Would have been even better with a mini fridge!

Local attractions

Head to Embsay Station (10 minutes’ drive) for a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, but be sure to get there well before your train is due to depart to make the most of the tiny vintage café, which serves yummy home-made cakes. It’s also worth keeping an eye on the website for events like murder mysteries and driving experiences. At Thornton Hall Farm Country Park (15 minutes), the children can ride ponies, feed lambs or go on a safari drive through the grounds to see the resident deer herd. There is also an indoor soft-play area and quad bikes (for both kids and for adults, should you feel unfairly left out…) Need to wind down further? Take a day trip to Harrogate (35 minutes), where the Victorian Turkish Baths is a spectacular spot for a steam, a soak or an invigorating massage (or a cold plunge, if that’s your jam). At the Royal Pump Room Museum you can learn more about the history of this spa town, before heading to Betty’s Café Tea Rooms for scones and sandwiches.
