  • Luxury hand-built lodges in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Settle; close to the Yorkshire Three Peaks
  • Kingsize bed, fitted kitchen and barbecue provided for each lodge
What a fabulous location for a break in the Yorkshire Dales National Park – Ashes Farm is about 20 minutes’ drive from Settle, almost central to the Yorkshire Three Peaks and surrounded by some of the area’s finest walking and mountain bike trails (the Dales Way and Pennine Way are within a mile, for example). All sorts of the Dales’ top attractions are close by here, as well, including the Ingleton Waterfall Trail, White Scar Cave and Malham Cove, plus the famed Ribblehead Viaduct, part of the Settle-to-Carlisle line and a particular favourite of landscape photographers, which is about a mile away. It’s not all about the location here though – the accommodation is equally enticing, with guests staying in hand-built lodges in the grounds of an attractive stone-built 17th-century farmhouse. They’re comfortable and well equipped with luxury touches, including a kingsize bed, a shower room and a fully fitted kitchen with full-size oven, hob and all sorts of useful utensils. There’s plenty of space to relax in the open-plan living area, but if it’s a fine day it’s likely you’ll want to head out to your patio area, which has a table, chairs and a barbecue for meals and drinks with a gorgeous backdrop of Pen-y-Ghent and the surrounding hills. If you’d rather end your day of hikes and sightseeing with a pint of local ale, it’s handy to know that an excellent local pub is about a mile away just next to the Ribblehead Viaduct and train station.

Local attractions

There are all sorts of ways to explore the Yorkshire Dales scenery from here – perhaps you’d like to head out for a walk on the Dales Way, go horse riding on the Pennine Bridleway or take it all in from a leisurely ride on the Settle-Carlisle railway. Or, if you’re feeling particularly energetic, maybe it’s time to tackle the Yorkshire Three Peaks – Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside are all fairly close by and make an excellent challenge (in fact, even one makes a pretty good day out for intrepid types…) There’s also the option of heading straight to some of the local landmarks such as White Scar Cave (10 minutes’ drive), the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (15 minutes) or Malham Cove and Janet’s Foss (30 minutes). And how about a true taste of the area? Up in Hawes (20 minutes), you can take a tour of Wensleydale Creamery, taste some of the famed cheese and pick up a piece to take back to your lodge to go with your evening drinks…

The Hive 1 bedroom lodge

Liked: We used this as a base for two nights in late September for doing the Three Peaks. It was vital to have somewhere nice to stay the night before so we could be rested and have a short drive to the starting point and even more importantly a short drive 'home' after a long and gruelling challenge. We stayed in the 'The Hive' which has a lovely Bee theme throughout. The cabin structure with Pine interior looks and smells amazing. It had all the facilities we needed to cook and chill out. The WiFi was a godsend due to poor phone signal as expected. The central heating works really well as the building is very well insulated and we were toasty warm, having it turn it off quite soon due to actually being too warm! Our hosts were very friendly and it was all round a lovely stay. I'd highly recommend it.
