  • Spacious site with fab views of the sea and Scarborough Castle
  • Five minutes' drive from Scarborough's North Bay beach
  • Pubs, restaurants and other amenities within walking distance
Scarborough or Whitby – which one’s best? Book a stay at Scalby Tops and you’ll be able to decide for yourself easily enough. This North Yorkshire site is five minutes’ drive from Scarborough’s North Bay beach and next to the Cinder Track for traffic-free walks or bike rides up to Whitby (perhaps stopping at Robin Hood’s Bay along the way too…) Such proximity to Scarborough also puts plenty more things within easy reach, including entertainment options including the Sea Life Centre, the golf course and the open-air theatre, and everyday essentials like shops, restaurants and fish and chip shops (surely an essential on any seaside holiday?) In fact you don’t have to stray far at all to feed yourselves around here – there are a couple of pubs within a few minutes’ walk, along with a bar and café at the local rugby club two minutes’ walk away. When you’re not out and about exploring this fabulous coastline, you’ll be staying at a large site that’s got great views out towards Scarborough Castle and the coast. Pitches are pleasingly spacious and have access to drinking water, portable toilets and an Elsan point (but please note that there are no showers on site). Families, groups and dogs are all welcome, but dogs will need to be kept on a lead unless they’re in the dedicated dog walk area.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: The site is splendid and have visited a few times now and shall keep returning. The pitches are great and you have your own space without the worry of someone pitching up next to you. It’s quiet and a well managed and looked after site by John who is very approachable and makes sure you’re ok and should you need anything he’s on hand. Overall a fantastic site which I hope doesn’t change too much and get commercialised.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: Great location, friendly owner, pitches are a good size and well maintained, nice views.

Disliked: We knew there wasn't many facilities when we booked, but it's a real shame as the site itself is nice, but in order for us to return there would need to be better facilities. Rubbish bins, and a basic shower/loo block are essential really. Other sites in the area have that for a similar price.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the feedback Charity ... as it is our first season, there are lots of things on our wish list - showers and bins included. Luckily the rugby club 200m away is available for a shower for £1 - and you get 10% off their cafe too! Maybe bins will come sooner - however, we advertise as a 'wild camping site' and try to keep things as close to nature as possible. With this in mind, people who enjoy the great outdoors all know that they take their rubbish away with them to keep the area nice and tidy. We just use the same principle. One thing that Scalby Tops has, which not many other sites in the area do, is have the amazing sea and Scarborough Castle views and is 5 minutes away from the beach (by car). In the words of Phil & Kirsty - "It's all about location, location, Location." Thanks for staying though, and for taking the time to give feedback - it really is appreciated.

Excellent site, large pitches, very clean facilities, lots to do.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Brilliant campsite, John was absolutely lovely and there to cater to any need, always around on site to help. Cleanest portaloos I have seen and constantly stocked on toilet roll :). We hired a fire pit which was a game changer for the nights we were here. The campsite is in a good location. And there’s a rugby club next door where you get 10% off in their gorgeous beer garden. There’s plenty to do around the area everything’s within a 10 minute drive, we went to the beach, park and water park it was a brilliant holiday, thank you!

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: Most things really. Lovely location, peaceful and could see the sea. Can have a fire and owner top bloke. Even a little foitball puch for the kids. Only £25 a night and 1o minutes from Scarborough. We will be back.

Disliked: Only bad point no shower block , electric or hot water but knew that when I booked. You can however have a shower for a £1 at the local rugby club.

Local attractions

Start in Scarborough for the nearest stretch of seaside – lovely North Bay beach (five minutes’ drive) is a sandy stretch with classic colourful beach huts, rockpools and areas that get some great surf waves. Across town (10 minutes) is another wide sandy beach at South Bay, a fine spot for swims and paddles. As well as the beaches, Scarborough is also home to Sea Life Scarborough, Alpamare UK waterpark, a smashing seafront golf course and an atmospheric open-air theatre that hosts all sorts of big-name artists through the summer. Elsewhere along the coast, you may like to take days out at Robin Hood’s Bay (20 minutes’ drive) and Whitby (25 minutes), exploring its Dracula heritage at the abbey and 199 Steps, sipping a pint in its brewery and visiting the Captain Cook Museum. Whitby’s also the place to board the North York Moors Railway for a steam-powered look at the local scenery. Alternatively, head to Dalby Forest (20 minutes) for mountain bike trails and a Go Ape adventure park. Other great days out nearby include North Yorkshire Water Park (20 minutes) and Flamingo Land Resort theme park (35 minutes).
