Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Location was easy to find, close to the North York Moors and larger shops not too far of a drive away. It’s nice that there is food on offer at the pub but unfortunately we arrived at 15.50 on a Sunday and was told the kitchens closed at 16.30 which didn’t leave us any time to get sorted and get some food from the pub. We were worried about noise from the pub but on the night we stayed it did all go quiet around 10pm on the campsite. Great site if you have kids as plenty of space to play.

Disliked: The shower was very dirty and covered in mud so I had to clean it myself before using it. Both toilets and showers could do with an upgrade. No marked pitches meant others pitched up very close to us.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: The pub and the food were excellent so was the live entertainment, bar staff were very friendly.

Disliked: The field we stayed in on the 1st night was a bit wet and thought we might get stuck. But on our last night we moved onto a pitch opposite the pub which was much better.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: The pub was very nice.

Disliked: Showers were filthy and were not cleaned during the time we were there. Toilets were filthy, some covered in poop! No loo roll and lack of hand towels. Septic tank should be signed, as it really smelt but unfortunately the field was full, due to people parking ridiculous, so we had to park near it! Very unpleasant.

Liked: Good clean site with adequate facilities. The pub does excellent food and serves some fine ales. The staff are extremely helpful as are the locals. Overall a very good stay.

Disliked: Booking in at 4pm means you lose quite a lot of time on site.

Local attractions

To work up an appetite for dinner, drive north for about 15 minutes to the North York Moors National Park, head west for the Howardian Hills (25 minutes) or make a break for the beaches and coast path around Filey and Scarborough (both about half an hour away) or Whitby (45 minutes). A bit of history as you roam? Stop in at Castle Howard (25 minutes) to stroll through the elegant gardens, visit the stunning stately home and seek out the secret island. Swish Scampston Hall (10 minutes) is also worth a stop, and there’s more recent history on display among the 20th-century exhibits at Eden Camp history museum (15 minutes). For more rural pursuits, join the pretty pink birds at Flamingo Land (20 minutes) or puff through the countryside on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering (15 minutes). When you fancy a change of scenery, head to York (45 minutes) for a day of visits to the minster, the city walls, the Jorvik Viking Centre, the railway museum, the chocolate museum…
