  • Peaceful pitches by a youth hostel in the centre of Helmsley
  • On the edge of the North York Moors National Park
  • Breakfast and evening meals on site, plus self-catering kitchen
Helmsley’s a fab choice for folk looking for fresh-air hols: the North Yorkshire market town is just on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, which means easy access to mile upon mile of hiking/bike trails and all manner of activities (climbing, horse riding, paragliding, clay pigeon shooting… take your pick). And YHA Helmsley is a fab choice for folk seeking a stay that won’t involve spending too many precious pennies. Peaceful pitches in the grounds of the youth hostel are in a nifty central location, which means easy access to the town’s famed collection of independent shops and options for eats and drinks (a bakery, a curry house, a fish and chip shop, a supermarket, a brewery… again, take your pick). If the day’s activities have left you devoid of the energy even to stagger the few minutes into town, there’s no need to face starvation: evening meals are served up in the dining room every night, and there’s a self-catering kitchen for those with supplies. A bar is also on site for those whose relaxation would be enhanced by the application of a little beer or two, and the dining room opens again in the mornings to provide energy in the form of proper breakfasts. Guests staying on the pitches here have 24-hour access to indoor facilities including toilets and showers, and can also use the launderette and drying room if they’ve managed to get damp and mucky on their travels.

Local attractions

It’d be easy (if perhaps a little muscle-testing) to spend many a day or week scampering about in the North York Moors National Park. There are walking trails aplenty, including easygoing circular ones and long-distance hikes on the 109 miles of the Cleveland Way, plus daredevil mountain bike routes and a Go Ape adventure course at Dalby Forest (half an hour’s drive), horse riding days from Hawnby (10 minutes) and all sorts of other activities both gentle and challenging. For a bit of a break, take to one of the area’s historic sights: Helmsley Castle is a 10-minute walk away, or you could drive to the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey (five minutes) or the still thankfully intact Castle Howard (25 minutes). For an even heftier dose of history, the gorgeous old streets of York are about 45 minutes away. It’s also a cinch to swap country air for coast here: follow the main road out of Helmsley and you’ll hit the seaside resort of Scarborough in a little less than an hour. If that’s a tad too far for a family day out, head instead for the zoo and theme park at Flamingo Land (25 minutes).
