  • Quiet dog-friendly glamping site on the edge of the North York Moors
  • A 10-minute drive from the Howardian Hills and 40 minutes from York
  • Firepit, barbecue and private eco-toilet and shower with each pitch
From spotting owls, deer, badgers and hares to counting the types of wild birds… if you have your sights set on a peaceful getaway in North Yorkshire, grab your glamping gear (wellies and games included) for the family-friendly and dog-friendly Freespirit Glamping on the edge of the North York Moors, a 40-minute drive from York. A 10-minute drive from the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty too, this is a wildlife haven where you’ll be nicely occupied stream-hopping, hiking or den-building in the surrounding area. With wildlife all around, it’s no wonder this site is geared up to be eco friendly. Swap your devices for starry skies, because there’s no electricity or wifi on the site (although you may find some 4G signal in the field if you do decide to bring along a mobile phone). There’s a firepit and barbecue provided with each pitch (and cutlery, cookery and utensils so you can dig in right away). Each pitch also has a dishwashing area, private eco-toilet and shower to wash away the day. Just bring along your own bedding or hire bedding from the site in advance. Food-wise you're welcome to concoct a chilli over the campfire, although you may instead like to opt for some good pub grub from one of several pubs 10 minutes’ drive away. If snacks are on your brain too, there are also food shops and farm shops (and takeaways too) within 15 minutes’ drive of the site.

Lilac bell tent

Liked: Can't recommend this place enough. It's in an incredible location overlooking rolling hills with a strawberry red sunset behind us, immaculate bell tent with made beds, a BBQ, a firepit, clean ecotoilets and hot showers. Andy was friendly and helpful, it was easy to get around and visit other places around the area too. Thank you Freespirit Glamping for the relaxed getaway for our family.

Local attractions

Set off to North Yorkshire's market towns… Helmsley (10 minutes’ drive), Thirsk (25 minutes) and Malton (25 minutes) are magnets for foodies. Call into one of several National Trust properties on the way… ogle the organic garden at Nunnington Hall (10 minutes), wander around the Cistercian monastery at Rievaulx Abbey (15 minutes) or admire the art at Beningbrough Hall (35 minutes). In York (40 minutes), go on a ghost walk or take the less fearsome route down the historic Shambles. See York Minster and the York Dungeon too, but don’t get caught up too long in the cells, as the JORVIK Viking Centre, York’s Chocolate Story and the free National Railway Museum York are some of the other museums worth a visit. The seaside on your mind? Dine on the quayside at Whitby (an hour), ride a donkey in Scarborough (an hour and five minutes) or see a traditional fishing village at Robin Hood’s Bay (an hour and five minutes). Filey and Saltburn-by-the-Sea (both an hour) are some other splendid seaside spots for a picnic, or you could hire a bicycle for the Cinder Track between Whitby and Scarborough.
