Liked: We had an amazing wild camping experience. The views were incredible, waking up to the views was a real treat, stunning. The family running the wild camping were very helpful and kind. We visited the Lakes and Kingsdale while we stayed. We even watched the farmer moving sheep from field to feild with his sheepdog. Plenty of space for the children to run around in the enclosed filed and play in the stream. We'll definitely be back to do the three peaks.

Local attractions

Red Shaw Farm Camping is a handy stopover for long-distance hikers, being 10 minutes’ walk from the Pennine Bridleway, 20 minutes from the Pennine Way and close to the Dales Way (half an hour). The famed Three Peaks Challenge is within your grasp here too, with Ingleborough 25 minutes’ drive, Whernside half an hour and Pen-y-Ghent 20 minutes away. Other less challenging places to explore on foot include Yockenthwaite Stone Circle (half an hour), or the Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail (25 minutes), leading to waterfalls and subterranean caves. Spend a happy day ticking off Dales landmarks like the impressive Ribblehead Viaduct (10 minutes), Malham Cove (40 minutes) and Aysgarth Falls (half an hour). Pretty Dales towns include Sedbergh (35 minutes), with its scattering of unusual shops, and Grassington (an hour), location of shoots for TV’s ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. And talking of small creatures, why not visit the rare red squirrels in their sanctuary at Snaizeholme (five minutes)?
