  • Peaceful site on a family-run working farm in rural North Yorkshire
  • A 20-minute drive from Harrogate and Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • Scenic views of the Arthington viaduct and River Wharfe
Pack your camera, your notebooks, your fishing kit, your walking boots – North Yorkshire’s Greengates Farm is a great spot for those seeking scenic and serene surrounds in which to spend some hobby time. Central to the attraction for photographers and trainspotters is the setting right by the Arthington viaduct, a handsome structure with 21 arches. It’s tipped as being particularly fine for snapping sunrise pics, so by staying on site you’ll have the best chance of catching it at its prettiest (if the peaceful vibe here doesn’t entice you to slumber through, that is...). By day, trains trundle across the viaduct to and from Leeds (12 miles away) and Harrogate (seven miles); once you’ve viewed them from afar, you can board one from Weeton station, a 25-minute walk away. If you'd rather roam under your own steam, there are plenty of walking and bike trails around the farm and in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. And if you’d rather not roam at all, amble down to the banks of the River Wharfe for a quiet day by the water (don’t forget to bring or buy a licence to keep things legal).

Local attractions

Rural rambles are top notch around these parts: the Yorkshire Dales National Park is a 20-minute drive away and has many a mile of trail to tramp along. If you’ve got a taste for farming life, make new furry pals at Donkey Sanctuary Leeds (15 minutes’ drive) or take a walk alongside woolly beasts on a trek from Nidderdale Llamas (half an hour). This part of the country is stacked full of day trip options too: historyheads and photographers will want to take a stroll around the ruins of Spofforth Castle (15 minutes' drive), while engine enthusiasts should plan a ride on the narrow-gauge Shipley Glen Tramway at the UNESCO-listed Victorian model village of Saltaire (half an hour). Harewood House (15 minutes) is another excellent visit with heaps to do including an exotic bird park, boat rides, an adventure playground and stunning gardens (designed by Capability Brown, no less). For urban days, drive to Leeds (half an hour) for art galleries, cultural events and a vast array of shops, or head to Harrogate (20 minutes) for the Royal Pump Room Museum and smart afternoon teas.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: Nice and flat. Even though there had been rain, grassed areas firm. Great walks near by, see otters in river. Good view.

Disliked: With no electricity or welfare facilities, price was a little high.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: Loved this place. We loved the superb views across the River Wharfe valley, the open space, the viaduct, the sunset, the rabbits...mustn't forget the rabbits...the tranquility, the feeling of being away from it all, the birdsong, the lowing cows down by the river, the distant bleating of sheep... We liked Farmer Paul... and we liked watching the occasional train scoot across the viaduct...we pitched up, we sat, we chilled, we chatted, we played a bit of cricket and chucked a frizbee about. We looked out, we spotted rabbits, we listened out, we heard birds, we loved the space and having this beautiful little corner of Yorkshire to ourselves! We sat some more, we chatted, we recharged, we watched the sky darken and the sun light up the clouds in pinks and oranges, we made ourselves a twinkly camp with fairy lights, we had our tea, we looked for rabbits in the dark, we couldn't see them but heard them thump out their alerts to each other like rabbit morse code...we listened out for night creatures...was it a barn owl screeching or something else? We went to bed late and slept like logs till it was time to get up...the rabbits were up before us. That's when we saw the red kite scouring the railway embankment for rabbits...did I mention the rabbits before? Ahh...simplest pleasures...lots of countryside to explore and yet so close to Harrogate, York or Leeds.

Disliked: 'Nowt! ...Except for having to leave after only one night to drive to London and return to work.

Liked: Peace and quiet, the views. Alongside a railway track, but it is high above the site and did not disturb us, was fascinating watching the trains cross the viaduct. Enjoyed watching the rabbits, and the cows with their calves.

Disliked: Nothing
