Flat, grassy pitches
Traditional tent camping
Surrounded by greenery

  • Back to basics site by a stream in quiet North Yorkshire countryside
  • A mile from the edge of the North York Moors National Park
  • A mile and a half from a well-known traditional village pub
Greenery, grass and wide open spaces pretty much sum up what life's like at Little Haven, a small rural campsite approximately a mile from the edge of the North York Moors National Park. With just a small number of pitches spread out in a spacious field, which for most of the year is used for growing grass for hay and silage, this out of the way spot has far-reaching views over the local landscape and is adjacent to a small stream. Ample car parking is available on a hardstanding area just to the side of the farm's stables, and basic amenities (including a single toilet) are provided in a field next to the pitches. Little Haven is happy to accept quiet pets, but they must be kept under control at all times. Whether or not you're bringing a dog, you'll not be short of walks in the surrounding area; lots of bike rides are easily accessible too. If you're planning on pedalling, secure storage for bikes can be made available to you by prior arrangement. The site is set about half a mile to the south of the small village of Easby; the nearest pub, The Dudley Arms, is about a mile and a half in the opposite direction in Ingleby Greenhow. The site team recommends this place, whether you're after light bites, a quick drink or a browse of the full à la carte menu.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: The owner of this beautiful clean & tidy site went above and beyond from us making the booking to camp for 1 night. He was so polite and professional but at the same time so friendly & easy to chat to and very helpful in everyway he was asked. We had the choice of where we wanted to pitch up our tent, we were allowed our car to be parked next to our tent making the whole campsite building experience so so much easier as everythjng was nxt to us so no back n forth carrying things to and from car, made massive help & took away any stresses, unreal.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike at all.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Plenty of space to choose your pitch in a huge grassy slightly sloped field. Helpful and friendly site owner. Excellent location for walking in the North Yorkshire Moors, or it's a 25-minute drive to the coast.

Disliked: A bit of a walk away from the toilet. Some other campers were noisy withloud music, which detracted from the peaceful setting. Possibly I was unlucky, but it's worth bearing in mind if you want/need a quiet weekend away as I did.

Local attractions

The local area is full of attractive towns and villages, like Great Ayton (five minutes' drive), where you can see the schoolroom once attended by Captain Cook (there's also an impressive monument to the man about 10 minutes away by road). In the national park, there are lots of attractions to explore, from the medieval abbey at Rievaulx (30 minutes) to the treetop adventures on offer at Go Ape Dalby (an hour). There are also plenty of things to see outside the national park, including the magnificent stately home at Castle Howard (50 minutes), the ancient cathedral city of York (an hour and five minutes) or traditional east coast seaside resorts like Scarborough (an hour and 15 minutes). Looking for an opportunity to leave the car back at base? Handily, Battersby station (a short walk away via footpaths across the fields) is just down the road for train rides on the scenic Esk Valley Line towards Whitby (where there are also connections with steam heritage services) or Middlesborough.
