Off to the beach in Yorkshire? Actually, why limit yourselves to just the one? Both Cowden and Mappleton beaches are within half a mile of Southfield Touring Park, so you can pop down to either one whenever you feel like it… You can take the dog with you too, as there are no restrictions when it comes to letting them have a splash in the sea and a run about on the sand. They’re very welcome back on site too, but will need to be kept on leads and cleaned up after at all times. This is a modern site with similarly smart facilities including a washing-up area, a wifi connection and a heated toilet/shower block. There’s also a food shop that can sort you out with snacks and various essentials for your meals – perhaps something to cook on the barbecue, as you’re allowed to bring a grill along with you to stay at this park. If you’re not in the mood, you may be pleased to hear that there’s a coffee shop at the beach and a lovely local pub five minutes’ walk away that serves good food alongside a range of ales and other drinks. When you’re not playing about at one of the beaches by the site, you might like to head up the coast to Hornsea (five minutes’ drive) for a small animal park, a farm park and a boating lake (plus another beach…) Hull and Beverley are both within a half-hour drive if you’re after more of an urban day out.

Liked: Super friendly hosts, and very clean and tidy site. Very welcoming as a solo camper, the bar was open to watch the football. 5minute walk to dog friendly beach. A lovely stay

Liked: We loved everything about it. The site was exceptional from the immaculate well designed luxury showers to the friendly family that ran the site. The Keg Shed felt like a local pub, it was well run well stocked and very comfortable. The weather was very wet at times and having the bar to shelter and escape to was very welcome.This has got to be the best site for miles around.

Disliked: Having to leave!!

Liked: Fantastic place, very clean site with an onsite pub which is a great addition to have. We arrived on the Friday which they served pie & pease and the Saturday it was roast pork and stuffing sandwiches, both delicious! We will definitely be back again

Liked: Everything was brilliant. The site was clean and tidy there was a groundsman tidying up the edges of the grassy areas when we arrived. The pitches were large and nicely spaced out. The toilet and showers were individual and spotless. The staff were friendly and helpful and the bar was welcoming and warm, without being noisy. Southfield Touring Park has spoiled us. We will be hard pressed to find another site so perfect.

Liked: Beautiful, clean, well kept site, hard standing fully serviced pitch, lovely bar and outdoor seating area, very dog friendly, toilet and shower block the absolute best we have ever used. Helpful, friendly owners, close to the beach, local cafe and local pub. An ideal get away location...

Liked: Fantastic, clean facilities. Great friendly people who own the campsite. Great bar and nice restaurant a few minute walk.

Disliked: Wasn't impressed being woken up at 5.50am on Sunday morning by the motorhome next door. Luckily I got back to sleep but seemed to be an issue with a young boy. Do prefer adult on sites for this reason.

Local attractions

Mappleton beach (10 minutes’ walk away) is an undeveloped stretch of sand that allows dogs all year and has a nice coffee shop where you can warm up after a long walk or a dip in the sea. Cowden beach (10 minutes) is another pretty little sandy cove that was once used as a RAF training ground – old shells can sometimes be spotted among the rocks, as can fossils. Up in Hornsea (five minutes’ drive), there’s a golf club and shopping outlet, plus boating on Hornsea Mere and animals to meet at Bugtopia Hornsea Zoo and Honeysuckle Farm. To see marine creatures instead, head into Hull (half an hour), home of the excellent The Deep aquarium. For a glimpse into the area’s history, head into Beverley (25 minutes) to see the minster and museum, or stop by at Burton Constable Hall & Grounds (15 minutes), where you can tour the grand house, stroll through the Capability Brown-designed parkland and find various activities and play areas for the kids.
