  • Family-run East Yorkshire campsite 10 minutes’ walk from the beach
  • Withernsea five minutes’ drive and The Deep aquarium 35 minutes
  • No-frills site with well-kept grass pitches; pub in Hollym village
Looking for simple family camping, two fields – or 10 minutes’ walk – from a sandy east-coast beach? Bag your pitch at Hollym Country Camp, a family-run short-stay site in Yorkshire’s East Riding village of Hollym; it’s also handily located 35 minutes’ drive from The Deep aquarium at Hull, and five minutes from all the family attractions at Withernsea, so chances are you’ll never run out of things to do. As it’s pretty-much wild camping here, facilities on the well-kept and hedge-sheltered camping meadow (which has a wildlife pond for you all to explore) stretch no further than a basic toilet block and a supply of drinking water. You’ll need to fend for yourselves for anything else – and do pack a decent torch for wandering around after dark. Barbecues are allowed by the pitches (please bring your own gear), and there’s a large supermarket in Withernsea (five minutes’ drive) for stocking up on supplies. If you’ve no love for outdoor cooking, just have a wander down to the tea shop and pub at Hollym.

Power optional grass and earth caravan site

Liked The site is ideal - quiet, cheap to book and central.
We got a bus into Withernsea, visited a couple of pubs and joined in with some karaoke!
The site manager is brilliant, friendly, there if needed but otherwise leaves you to get on with it.
The dog also appreciated the free treats.

Disliked No toilet roll in the toilets but luckily I always take my own.

Power optional grass and earth caravan site

Liked Very friendly greeting & shown exactly how & where the campervan was to be parked. Quiet site but became fairly busy

Disliked Only one toilet, just cold water, no soap to wash hands & nothing to dry hands either, in a small garden shed for the whole campsite, No showers. One outside sink to wash dishes in or to clean teeth & Entrance & Exit gate extremely hard to open & close. A little bit like wild camping!

Local attractions

Withernsea (five minutes’ drive) has a sandy beach backed by a promenade and amusement arcades, and you can climb up to the top of the lighthouse for far-reaching views over the North Sea and Spurn Point. Summer concerts and festivals are held in the Valley Gardens, and Millennium Green Park has playgrounds for younger kids. Any bad-weather days can be happily spent in the Game King bowling alley or letting the kids loose in aqua discos at the Pavilion Leisure Centre. There are rays and sharks to watch in vast aquariums at The Deep (35 minutes), and you can turn the kids into budding Chris Packhams at Bugtopia Hornsea Zoo (35 minutes) as they handle reptiles and big hairy spiders (if they dare). In more sedate pursuits, delve into local history with a tour of the Cold War bunkers at RAF Holmpton (10 minutes), or step back in time in Hull’s Old Town, an historic, cobbled quarter with horse-drawn carriages on display in the Streetlife Museum and exhibits on the abolition of slavery at Wilberforce House.
