  • Back-to-basics field with horses, a five-minute drive from Pocklington
  • York half an hour’s drive; Danes Dyke Nature Reserve 55 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site; pub and walking trails within a half-hour walk
Ready for a wild camping experience? Whether your answer is an enthusiastic ‘I was born ready’ or a cautious ‘willing to give it a try’, Apple Tree Farm might be the place for you. Picture the scene: an isolated, tree-lined field in the East Riding of Yorkshire with no toilets, no showers and no running water. This is truly as wild as it gets. Is it, though? Actually, this peaceful pop-up site is also within a five-minute drive of the market town of Pocklington, with its pubs, eateries and shops. There’s also a traditional boozer serving ales and home-cooked food in the village of Millington (five minutes’ drive or a half-hour walk). After your pub lunch, you can explore the surrounding area. Trails lace Millington Wood, with its springtime carpet of bluebells and wild garlic; or you can join the Yorkshire Wolds Way for a hike through chalk valleys and pastures. During your wanderings, you can have your canine buddy by your side, since well-behaved dogs are welcome at Apple Tree Farm. However, please note that they should be kept on a lead in order not to frighten the horses who share the spacious field. (If you’re concerned about over-friendly equines poking their heads inside your tent at night looking for carrots, you can relax: the horses are stabled after dark.)

Local attractions

Occupying a former RAF bomber station, Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial (20 minutes’ drive) displays all sorts of flying machines, from a replica of the Wright Brothers’ Flyer to World War II fighters (such as a Spitfire and a Messerschmitt) and Cold War aircraft. It’s also worth keeping an eye on the website for events like Open Cockpit Day. From its imposing Minster to the JORVIK Viking Centre, York (half an hour) has plenty to keep you busy for a day – and then some. After checking out the main sights, you can stroll through the Shambles, an area of cobbled streets lined with shops, or follow the York Cat Trail, looking for statues of felines climbing buildings or sitting on window sills. The Flamborough Headland Heritage Coast (55 minutes) is home to interesting rock formations (like the Drinking Dinosaur) and the Danes Dyke Nature Reserve, with trails and steps crossing its wooded ravines. There is also plenty of wildlife to observe here, from bats to puffins and seals.
