  • Peaceful pub site with large well-maintained pitches
  • In Bolam and five minutes from the A68; play area on site
  • Beer garden; varied food menu to eat in or take away on weekends only
Durham – and Darlington? And holidays in a comely countryside location… with a fine food pub (closed Monday through to Friday, along with the reception) and beer garden right on site? But of course… come to Countryview Caravan and Camping Site. The Countryman pub on site has a properly hefty menu of eats to suit all tastes. It's open for lunch, dinner and Sunday carvery, with takeaways available at lunchtimes and evenings (pizza, parmesans, kebabs and fish and chips being among the options), and includes a large function room for rallies or for big groups. Well-behaved dogs are allowed in the pub. (Please note that the pub is closed on weekdays.) The accommodation part of the park has well spaced pitches, scenic views and a big play area. Showers and toilets are available: toilets in the bar as well as the 24-hour access on site. There are disabled facilities too, plus a parent and baby washroom, chemical disposal and a washing-up area. Free wifi is available in the pub. Countryview's nicely and niftily placed – its peaceful rural setting is five minutes' drive from the A68, in the village of Bolam, and with plentiful shops, restaurants and cafés in Darlington within 15 minutes' drive.

What customers say

Spacious, peaceful site with great views. Excellent playground for kids. Good pub food, friendly staff. Showers/toilets could use a spruce up, and pub hours vary.

Liked Pitch size was good (but the ones on the left hand side as you look down the site are on downhill a slope).

Disliked Facilities were lacking somewhat. A small 2 toilet/2 shower portacabin at the very top end of the site. Very small very cramped and in dire need of an upgrade. Mens showers were even further away and again only 2 of them. For a site that has 20 pitches which could hold easily between 2 and 8 people - not enough to go round when the small site is full.

Liked Park nice and secure feeling for single adult with kids, nice and quiet for time of year. Hot water for showers
A bit basic, exactly what I was looking for. Loved the nearby animals and waking to there noise.

Disliked I actually liked that the shop was closed until weekend so the kids didn’t spend all day in and out but it would have been nice for them to have got something.

Some campers should clean up better after their stay it would make such a difference to not have bits of things on the grass for others and any pets.

Liked Brilliant little campsite. The play park is brilliant for kids and the food is fantastic in the pub, especially the Sunday dinners, those are a must. We stayed on pitch 1 opposite the play park which was brilliant for watching our little one right from our pitch. Best thing about the whole place is the Hospitality, really lovely owners, this one is a must.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Liked Quiet and clean site, everyone we met very friendly, food very nice, great park for the kids, just got left alone and left to it by the owner, shower and toilet area clean.

Disliked The owner charging me for a baby bowl on the carvery after i spent money on drinks there friday night, drinks and food saturday night and then carvery sunday morning and we asked for a spare plate for my 3 year old and was told no and that we had to pay £3 for a “baby bowl” which wasnt listed on the menu on the bar, bit of a piss take really. Its not the money its just the principle, only thing that bugged me really!

Local attractions

If you're at the site in summer, take yourself and the crew along to the spectacular live history show of Kynren, using a cast and crew of hundreds to tell the tale of two thousand years of English history and legend as seen by a child. Durham has history galore all year round too: you could also steam along to Locomotion (the Shildon railway museum, within 15 minutes), Bowes Museum (25 minutes), the open-air exhibits of Beamish Museum (45 minutes) and the Kynren backdrop of Auckland Castle (15 minutes). And then there's mighty old Durham (30 minutes), home of spectacular Durham Cathedral as well as – possibly of more interest to the kids – a maze and gardens at Crook Hall. The Hartlepool seaside town of Seaton Carew and the North Yorkshire resort of Redcar are within 40 and 45 minutes' drive for beach days; hikes and bike routes are close by, and the famed High Force waterfall is 40 minutes away. Info on local tourist attractions is at the pub.
