Heathland

  • Peaceful wild-style camping at a Suffolk heathland site
  • A 10-minute drive to Woodbridge, Rendlesham Forest and the east coast
  • Dog-friendly pitches with space for up to five guests; groups welcome
Heading out into the woods is a thoroughly peaceful and relaxed experience at Holistic Woods, a next-to-nature site in the heathlands of Sutton, part of the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You’ll only be 10 minutes’ drive from Woodbridge here, but this is a properly rural escape where you can set up on grass pitches or in a secluded corner of the woods. Each pitch takes up to five people, so you can bring a small gang with you (or book several and have a larger gang) – and dogs are very welcome to come along and join in the fun too. Nature has been left pretty much untouched here, so pitches have a wild-camping vibe to them – but with the addition of portable toilets for added convenience. Please note that campfires can’t be permitted on site though, because there’s dense woodland all around. A small supermarket is about a mile away for any supplies you may need, and there are plenty of shops, pubs and places to eat around Woodbridge. This is a fabulous spot for hikers and bike riders, who can set out to explore the heath just around the site, head off to the banks of the nearby River Deben or stroll by the seaside (the east coast is only about 10 minutes’ drive away). It’s also possible to walk to the historic site of Sutton Hoo in half an hour or so.

What customers say

Stunning wild campsite in woodland for a peaceful escape. Loved the natural setting, spacious pitches (woods or fields), and friendly staff. Basic facilities (water, portaloos) suit wild camping, though portaloos need tidier upkeep. Some road noise in open fields.

Unpowered forest floor campervan, tent or trailer tent site (wild)

Liked First time at Holistic woods and we absolutely loved it, 2 adults and 2 children. Really gave the wild camping feel, we camped in the woods and it was everything we wanted! Perfect woodland site, can't wait to come again. Lots of different areas to camp, can choose from grass fields, woods and they also had teepee's available on site. Loved the option of choosing your own pitch! Thanks Holistic woods!

Unpowered forest floor campervan, tent or trailer tent site (wild)

Liked Very quiet, very peaceful. Nice big spots to pitch. The other campers were quite considerate. Loved it.

Disliked The only thing that stopped this getting a higher rating was the fact there was no one in reception and no one to greet us.

Unpowered forest floor campervan, tent or trailer tent site (wild)

Liked A lovely, relaxed site. Facilities are minimal but that adds to the charm.

Disliked A bit of a tidy up leading to the campsite is needed but this doesn’t detract from the lovely, back-to-nature feel of the site.

Friendly host but he really does need to fix his hose firmly to the tap when watering the trees. So much water was wasted while I was there and we are in the middle of a drought!

Unpowered forest floor campervan, tent or trailer tent site (wild)

Liked This is a super-basic site - just some portaloos dotted about the place and a cold water tap - but it is a beautiful and peaceful spot to pitch for a night or two.
We felt it was a little overpriced for the basic facilities, but we enjoyed our stay very much.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Hands down one of the best campsites I’ve used for a motorcycle trip!
If you like back-to-basics, wild-camping style trips, this is the place. Nestled in a sandy forest, it's super chilled—just check in and pitch wherever you like. Facilities are minimal (water point and porta-loos), but that simplicity is what makes it so good. Perfect for a night or two on the road. Friendly staff, lovely scenery, and 100% on my list to revisit.

Disliked Porta loo's in morning can be a bit dirty but that's sort of expected.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Natural environment and choices for pitches amongst trees or in clearings. Good to have running water (standpipe) and portaloos.

Disliked No effort to prevent a group from making extremely loud antisovial noise from about 10pm to 5am, resulting in no sleep the first night (a Friday). Second night was peaceful, but it is concerning that site staff seemed to be involved in the all night partying.

Local attractions

Some intriguing things lurk in the natural areas around here… including lots of wildlife like owls, hares and Chinese water deer at Orford Ness National Nature Reserve (20 minutes’ drive) and the rather more unexpected UFO landing site hidden away in Rendlesham Forest (10 minutes). You can also seek out an ancient royal burial site stuffed with treasures at Sutton Hoo (half an hour’s walk). What else might you expect to find in these rural surrounds? Perhaps a collection of friendly animals at Easton Farm Park (20 minutes’ drive), Tudor towers at Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) or wine tours at Shawsgate Vineyard (25 minutes)? Other days out nearby might take you to Woodbridge (10 minutes) for a boat trip and a walk around the mill museum, to see the planes of Parham Airfield Museum (20 minutes) or for a dip in the sea from the beach at Aldeburgh (25 minutes).
