Camping among the trees

  • Pop-up site in rural Suffolk near Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds
  • A 30-minute drive from Thetford Forest Park and Ipswich river cruises
  • Stay in an old orchard with a playground on site
Want to be in deepest countryside but close enough to a town for a spot of shopping or a night in the pub? Check out the offerings at Whitehouse Farm, set in six acres of glorious rural Suffolk, well away from roads and traffic noise and yet only 20 minutes’ drive from the pubs and indie shops of Bury St Edmunds. This is also a super spot for kids, as there is a playground with climbing equipment on site and some fab family walks directly from the farm – you can bring the pooches too, but they need to be kept on leads please. The pitches are located in the meadow, just beyond where the shepherd huts sit in the old orchard among damson, apple, pear and greengage trees. Shared facilities include loos, showers, a water tap, a washing-up area and a laundry room. You can pick up supplies in Stowmarket (15 minutes’ drive) – and if you don't fancy cooking, well… those Bury St Edmunds pubs await. For chilly evenings, a sauna is also available (chat to site staff for more details).

What customers say

Friendly, tidy spot in stunning country, great for families. Clean amenities, peaceful vibes, and fun stuff like a swim pond, sauna, playground & walks. Owner's a star! Most loved it, though some noted guest or train noise.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Excellent site, clean bathrooms and strong showers. Pitch was great, nice and flat and superb size. Owner was beyond polite and accommodating, greeting us and giving a small tour on arrival. Surrounding area is peaceful with plenty of good walks and public paths. Small town nearby for supplies. Would and will be staying again in future!

Unpowered forest floor tent site

Liked Very peacefully and quite site. Toilets /shower clean and good lighting.

Disliked Wheel chair access was a little difficult on the stone path to push our 9 yesr old.

Had a step into toilets so wouldn't have got a wheel chair in to the toilet. Lucky our son could use crutches.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Very, very clean toilets. Two playgrounds for the children were a big hit. Sauna looks great - shame I didn’t have a chance to try it out. There is a small pond - not really for swimming in but lovely to look at; we were fascinated by the beautiful dragonflies and spent ages watching them there. Glamping wagons looked lovely from the outside. There are two wheelbarrows available to help with transporting your kit.

Disliked Lack of easily accessible bins (apart from compost). Also, it would be really helpful if there were some old bricks available, for portable bbqs.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked We really loved the facilities available , the toilets and showers were impeccable and the campsite was clean and well supplied, we enjoyed the space and the scenery around us. We went on some long walks to near by villages which had lovely pubs and met lots of friendly people along the way. Easy access to Supermarkets (10 min drive) and an hour from the beach was a good day out. Rob was really friendly and relaxed and made us feel welcomed. Incredible Value for money and the fire pit and barbecues provided were a massive touch. Will definitely recommend.

Unpowered forest floor tent site

Liked Clean, quiet area, plenty of toilets and showers. We are first time campers, only stayed one night to trial the kids. And whitehouse farm was a great choice, completely hassle free and the owner introduced himself and made us feel very welcome.

Tawny shepherd's hut

Liked Quiet area, not many people around. Clean toilet facilities and the owner was very friendly and helpful during our stay!
The hut was very good, had all the basic things in the kitchenette, the sink was external but in close proximity.

Local attractions

The pretty town of Bury St Edmunds (20 minutes’ drive) holds a local market every Wednesday and Saturday, where you can pick up foodie bits and pieces. It also has indie shopping, a spectacular cathedral, brewery tours and popular restaurants for a respite from all the sightseeing. Alton Water (40 minutes) is a top spot for canoeing and sailing, and any rainy days are covered by the swimming pool in the leisure centre at Stowmarket (15 minutes). A day trip to the Norfolk Broads (45 minutes) to hire a day-cruiser boat is also a firm family favourite, or you might like to have a go at punting along The Backs in Cambridge (an hour) – if that’s too much like hard work, take a look at the city’s historic colleges instead. When the kids need a runaround, hire bikes for off-roading at Thetford Forest Park (half an hour) or let them try out the treetop rope courses at Go Ape Thetford (45 minutes). If only a beach day will do, Aldeburgh (an hour) has a sand and shingle stretch that's safe for swimming, and a popular fish and chip shop for after you’ve had a dip.
