  • Busy, well-equipped site surrounded by the open Suffolk countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Sutton Hoo; 45 minutes from the coast
  • Shop, restaurant, miniature golf, owl sanctuary and play area on site
Looking for a Suffolk spot with lots of open space? The dog-friendly Stonham Barns Holiday Park might hit the sweet spot. Well-placed for the Suffolk and Norfolk countryside and coast, this place is equal parts relaxing and active. The latter is very much helped by the fact that the site is part of the Stonham Barns Golf Park site, which has a whole host of family-friendly (and quite frankly fabulous) attractions… There’s a pirate-themed miniature golf course, a sensory room and a funfair with rides and bumper cars, which should all prove a hit with pint-sized guests. No need to go hunting in the trees: the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on site has over 80 owls and daily flying displays featuring birds of prey. Catch a comedy or tribute act at the Aspal Theatre, sojourn at the fishing lakes or get creative at the pottery painting studio, all of which are on site. Among these attractions are handy foodie places too. There’s a tearoom if you’re craving an afternoon tea and cake, a restaurant powered by local produce and a village shop selling essential food fare. These pair well with the bar and clubhouse, which has sports screens and celebrity evenings, and a shopping village full of niche independent shops. Along with a showground hosting weekly events like car or dog shows and a Sunday car boot fair, these are all one to two minutes’ walk from the pitches. On the immediate site, however, the facilities include showers, toilets, a washing-up area, disabled facilities, wifi, a kids’ play area and spaces for kids to run around and let off steam. There's also a post office on site which provides cash back and other banking services.

What customers say

Spacious, well-run park with plenty for families: funfair, amusements, shops. Friendly staff, lots of non-electric space. Toilets/showers dated, occasional noise/wasps. Highly recommended, many keen to return.

Liked Great facilities and friendly staff. Went for Swede Fest Truck Show so fantastic weekend. No problem leaving motorhome on site after checkout time on final day so we could go out for the day in Felixstowe. We had a great pitch on edge of field, so very quiet.

Disliked Nothing that we disliked.

Liked Great place with lots to do onsite. Very friendly staff in all the places onsite, we had a great weekend. Shame the weather wasn’t as friendly, but that’s camping in a tent for you.

Liked We absolutely love Stonham! The site warden is a legend — she’s always happy, always helpful, and somehow always there (we’re convinced she has clones). The bar is perfect whether you’re after a quick pint, a meal or a takeaway, and the staff are super-friendly. Dogs are welcome too — ours thinks it’s her second home.

The Sunday car boot is our weekend cardio, and if you’re lucky enough to catch an event it’s even better. (Pro tip: tell them you’re camping or you’ll pay full price like we did the first time 🤦🏼‍♀️.)

The barns are full of quirky shops with something for everyone, the dog groomers have made our pooch look like a superstar, and if you’re feeling energetic there’s pitch & putt, golf and golf football. A stroll around the fishing lakes is the perfect way to unwind and take in some peace and quiet before heading back for more fun. Bloomfield Fair is also a brilliant way to spend a couple of hours with the kids.

Two middle-aged people, one spoiled dog, loads of things to do — what’s not to love about Stonham?

Liked All the staff we met were very nice and helpful. The place is well run. Lots to do for the children and families. Lovely pottery place and there was a funfair and amusements. Lots of shops to look round.

Disliked Unfortunately where we were sited wasn't the best and there were caravans with workmen living in them opposite us. The men were leaving the site early in the morning which disrupted the morning. Totally understand why the men were there and that's fine but maybe we should have been pitched further away. The toilets need upgrading, although there was a regular friendly cleaner it must be hard to keep them looking clean. No ot sure what the shower clocks were like as I didn't use them.

Local attractions

With all the attractions on site, it might be a while till you look outwards in search of entertainment. However, when you do, the Suffolk coastline is splendidly within reach, as the site is on the A1120 tourist road. Thorpeness (50 minutes' drive), Aldeburgh (45 minutes) Southwold (50 minutes) deliver on walks, watersports and simple seaside amusements. This is also an excellent place to channel your inner historian and deep dive into the past. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) is a Norman castle with a walk across the 10-metre-high walls. Sutton Hoo (half an hour) is just as spectacular, with two medieval cemeteries where a ship with Anglo-Saxon pieces was found. Perhaps pretty walks and eating out in restored Victorian buildings next? Snape Maltings (40 minutes) on the river Alde is a splendid setting for strolls and cycles, whether around the riverside loop or joining the Suffolk Coast Cycle Route 41. Take in the scenery on a river boat or sip on something caffeinated in the many independent eating venues in the Victorian buildings.
