  • Dogs welcome; village pub a 20-minute walk away
Pretty fishing towns, expansive beaches and riverside walks – all that should be enough to fill every waking hour you spend in Suffolk (not to mention that there’s much more beside). And Hulver Escapes, a sweet spot with a distinctly peaceful rural vibe, puts you within easy driving distance of many key attractions in the area. Hulver Escapes is an adults-only site; however, well-behaved canines are welcome, and there are several dog-friendly pubs in the vicinity. The nearest is in the village of Snape (just under a mile away), which you can reach on foot in about 20 minutes. The site is on the edge of the Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape. Here, you can explore woodlands such as Captain’s Wood (10 minutes’ drive), famed for its springtime display of bluebells (and home to deer and barn owls), and the marshes at National Trust - Orford Ness National Nature Reserve (20 minutes), a former nuclear research site that has now been given over to nature. Alternatively, walk the Sailors’ Path, a six-mile trail that starts in Snape Maltings (five minutes) and leads to Aldeburgh through the Snape Marshes, where you might catch a glimpse of otters. In addition to motorhome pitches with electric hook-up, the site has a handful of facilities, such as portable toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a drinking water tap, plus chemical-disposal points.

Local attractions

A landmark site on the River Alde, Snape Maltings (five minutes’ drive) started life as a barley processing site. Its Victorian buildings have now been reinvented as a cultural and shopping destination, with the jewel in its crown being the Snape Maltings Concert Hall, established by local(ish) composer Benjamin Britten. In Aldeburgh (10 minutes), the local museum (housed in a half-timbered Tudor building) displays archaeological artefacts and exhibits related to the town’s history as a working port. Grab some fish and chips and take a stroll along the beach to the oversized Scallop sculpture. Then head inland to RSPB North Warren to spot bitterns and nightingales, or to the Red House Aldeburgh, Benjamin Britten’s home. Sutton Hoo (25 minutes) is a National Trust site stretching across 270 acres. In 1938, archaeologists unearthed the boat grave of an Anglo-Saxon king who had been laid to rest with many treasured possessions. Some of these are now on display in the High Hall.
