  • Dog-friendly Norfolk site 25 minutes’ walk from Thompson Water
  • Easy access to the Peddars Way, Cycle Route 13 and the Pingo Trail
  • Playground and pub within 10 minutes' walk
There’s a plentiful supply of Norfolk strolls or pedals around Acorn Meadow, a well-maintained dog-friendly countryside site. There are signposts scattered around the edge of the site pointing you in some splendid directions… perhaps to the Peddars Way past pingo ponds and Roman roads or Cycle Route 13? The Pingo Trail is another top route for seeing historic pingo ponds (and see them you should, as these rare ponds are mostly only found in Norfolk). Thompson Water, famed for the same periglacial landforms and popular with dragonflies and the occasional otter, is 25 minutes’ walk away. If you’re looking to get an idea of the wider picture, the site is 50 minutes’ drive away from The Broads and Norwich and an hour from Great Yarmouth on the Norfolk coast. There’s a playground a few minutes’ walk away and a sports hall 10 minutes’ walk away. Plus, at the end of the day, tasty food is served up at the local pub 10 minutes’ walk away. Families and couples should both very much like this grassy field site, which has simple facilities covering water, a washing-up area, toilets and a shower, plus a toilet emptying point for tourers. Everything is well maintained, so it should be no surprise that there’s always help at hand too.

What customers say

Lovely, peaceful campsite with helpful owner Fred. Level, spacious pitches, clean basic facilities. Great for walks/cycling, pub nearby. Washing-up water could be hotter, but improvements considered. Highly recommended countryside break.

Owlery camping pod

Liked What’s there not to like. Fred was great we visited 27 dec for 2 nights and the pod was already warmed up for us. There was a bottle of wine to enjoy in the fridge and a heater so we wasn’t cold. Total peace and tranquility and a quick escape over the Christmas holiday. Very highly recommended.

Power optional grass motorhome site

Liked site was clean, and empty due to end of season, plot was level, elec hook up was easy, loos clean, washing up facilities and showers basic, had two good nights sleep, very quiet, was met by Fred the owner, a really nice gentleman, was recommended "chequers" pub grub to eat which was set in old 1600 pub, lovely.Overall a nice simple stay for a couple of nights with no issues.

Disliked not really dislike, but the loos could do with more lighting inside, this was pitch black once inside.

Local attractions

There are lots of hikes to get stuck into from Acorn Meadow. Don’t overlook the trails of Thetford Forest Park (10 minutes’ drive), which has around 45,000 acres of dense forestry to explore. The forest’s namesake, Thetford (20 minutes), is just as splendid in a less green way. Some of its top spots include the Dad’s Army Museum, the Ancient House Museum and Thetford Priory. King's Lynn (50 minutes) is a household name in Norfolk. Check out the merchants’ houses and the Custom House from its heyday. If you time your trip right, you could snap up some good local products at the Sunday and Tuesday markets. Norwich (50 minutes) is also packed with things to do should you want a rest from the walks. Tick off all the many historic sites, like Norwich Cathedral, Saxon Marketplace and the St. Ethelbert’s and Erpingham gates. After a little rest stop or an easy afternoon activity? Melsop Farm Park (15 minutes) has some lovely little play areas and a café for a family-friendly and budget-friendly afternoon out.
