  • Wild camping on a secluded organic estate at Melton Constable, Norfolk
  • A half-hour drive to Sandringham Estate and to North Norfolk beaches
  • Grass pitches, hot showers, food delivery, farm shop and pub on site
How many campsites offer you the chance to stay on an organic farming estate? Well, Eight Acres does. Set among hay meadows grazed by cattle and sheep, this is a thoroughly wild camping experience for all the family – and the dog too – so you can expect to be surrounded by flowers and birdsong, and you’ll also probably see a lot of free-range chickens tootling about. As the site is completely off grid, your stay will have zero impact on the environment but you still get the home comforts of gas-powered showers and flushing loos. You can be as friendly with fellow guests or as private as you want during your stay, as the pitches are on an eight-acre meadow with masses of space for everyone. Farm-reared produce is brought to the camping field once a week, so you can buy bits and pieces to grill on your barbecue. There’s also a farm shop a short distance away, selling produce from the estate and local farmers, and a five-minute walk down a track brings you to Barney’s Restaurant and Bar, where you can grab a local beer, an evening meal, Sunday roast or takeaway pizza. Sleepy local villages will turn up a lot of traditional pubs too. You can mosey around the estate’s woods and water meadows on circular strolls, or ferry the kids to North Norfolk’s beaches in 30 minutes by car. And incredibly, this peaceful spot is only a two-hour hop from the M25.

Local attractions

Norfolk’s long been the summer retreat of royalty, and you can check out how the other half lives on guided tours of the lavish rooms and gardens at Sandringham Estate. Majestic Holkham Hall (both 30 minutes’ drive) is hardly slumming it either, and after you’ve seen the elegant staterooms, the kids can let off steam on rope trails or paddle off the beach. Ah, those Norfolk beaches. Cromer (30 minutes) is your typical seaside resort, with a Victorian pier and sandy beaches, and if you’re feeling adventurous, it’s also got great snorkelling over the off-shore chalk reef. Quiet Mundesley (45 minutes) is ideal for young families and Sheringham (30 minutes) for rook pooling and crabbing, while Wells Beach (25 minutes) is dog friendly, so the pooch can have fun too. And if the kids are still demanding more, whisk them off on family rides at Pettitts Animal Adventure Park (an hour) or to Roarr! Dinosaur Adventure (25 minutes) for guinea pig encounters and stage shows.
