  • Peaceful adults-only site in a wildlife haven
  • Two fishing lakes with carp, tench, roach, rudd and bream
  • A 10-minute stroll to Hingham with shops and a dog-friendly inn
Hoot. And (fishing) hook. Big folk, come and join the owls, hawks, red kites, muntjac deer and other local inhabitants round and about adults-only Rectory Farm Fishing and Camping Site in Norfolk. Bring your rod and licence to tackle the slippery specimens at Rectory Farm’s two fishing lakes, filled with mostly carp and tench, and smaller shoals of roach, rudd and bream to try your hand at for a day or half-day charge. The lakes are as well maintained as the site facilities, where guests have access to toilets, showers, taps with drinking water, a fridge freezer, sinks with hot water all day and night, waste disposal point and picnic benches to take in the views. Dogs are welcome and have special areas on site for energetic walks. From Rectory Farm, it’s a safe 10-minute stroll to Hingham, with the dog-friendly White Hart inn, shops, bakers and butcher to pick up sausages and other essentials for the evening campfire.

Unpowered grass tent site (solo)

Liked: For a solo motorcycle traveller with a small tent, I liked the clean, private spots. Grass was very nice and flat. Had a very nice chat with the owner. The walking trail through the nature behind the camping is a recommendation. Price: this was a steal.

Disliked: Toilets and kitchen about due for an overhaul, judging from European continental perspective. Could be on par for England.

Unpowered grass tent site (solo)

Liked: Fabulous secluded pitches. Very quiet. Young lad brought me some wood for the firepit. 5 pounds gets you a large bag with newspaper, kindling and logs. I enjoyed my little camping trip here. Toilets were clean enough etc. Nothing to complain about. Price was £14 per night for me, my tent and one car. That is good value these days. No WIFI or none that I was told about. But I didn't need it.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked: This was our second visit to Rectory Farm. What's not to like? Great location from which to explore Norfolk. Great 'local' location (places to walk to; decent pub, chippy, tea rooms, Co-Op within ambling distance). Well kept site. Generous pitch sizes. Smashing, helpful owners ... I repeat - what's not to like?

Liked: Arrived late on and it was dark but host still came and met me and showed me options where to pitch. Great spot with everything you need. Lots of space and lovely scenery in the morning, early morning start but the chickens did in fact cross the road… from the pond to the farm house

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Hands down the best campsite in Southern England. Richard goes above and beyond to ensure a thoroughly enjoyable stay is had by all. The site itself is wonderfully quiet, set in beautiful countryside. The facilities are well equipped and very clean, as a camper it is especially nice having communal fridges and freezers and a microwave available. The camping pitches are nicely spaced out across a meadow which adds an element of seclusion rarely found. There are fire pits on most pitches with logs available at the reception for a very reasonable price. We have made return visits for a few years now, it is the highlight of our year.

Power optional concrete slab caravan site

Liked: What a great site! Although on arrival it looks a little bit in need of some tlc when we got set up we found that actually it's quirkiness was great. There are no rows of touring pitches, but little area's where you pitch up, which, as we were meeting friends we could have a private pitch next to each other and not disturb anyone else with our dogs. Other friends had hired the Shepherds hut close by and we could all meet together. The fishing was great fun, with 2 lakes to choose from. The dog walks were very easy and loads of room. The facilities were very good, clean and tidy. All you can ask for. Definitely going back!

Local attractions

Once you’ve put down the fishing rod, head to Hingham with the camera to snap some shots of very fashionable houses: Hingham’s popularity with posh Georgians who came here in the 18th-century led to the town being labelled Little London. The eastern side of the market place is said to have the best collection of Georgian houses in Norfolk, perfect for pics and a possible rant about 21st-century property prices (buy a motorhome instead). From Hingham, it’s about 17 miles east to Norwich, Norfolk’s capital town and filled with a capital amount of attractions such as England’s biggest six-day indoor market, the greatly-sized Gothic fountain at the Plantation Garden and the ‘Norwich 12’, 12 listed buildings in the city including stupendous Norwich Cathedral. Keep driving your way east to reach the Norfolk Broads: their 125 miles of navigable waterways are where to go in Norfolk for all things boat, whether you want to try a guided river trip to wildlife spot, hire a boat to drift lazily down the water or take out a canoe for placid paddling. The Broads have several good angling lakes to pick from too, or try sea fishing off the beach from Sea Palling round to the coast at Great Yarmouth. A 45-minute drive from Rectory Farm will bring you to the gorgeous beaches of the north Norfolk coast and the 45 miles of the North Norfolk Coastal Path, going from Hunstanton to Cromer via Wells and Blakeney in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
