  • Remote wild camping with boat mooring in the Broads, set over 19 acres
  • By the Wherryman's Way footpath, five miles from Great Yarmouth
  • A 10-minute walk from Britain's smallest station at Berney Arms
Fancy a bit of an adventure? One that involves staying at a Norfolk site so remote the road runs out three miles away, leaving you to navigate your way there along a track, crossing a couple of railway lines and quite possibly encountering a herd of cows along the way? If such splendid seclusion appeals, make a beeline for Berney Arms Camping, a truly wild site across 19 acres on the banks of the Yare river in the Norfolk Broads. Take your pick from a collection of pitches around the place – some in a central mowed area and others scattered around in remote, wild corners for folk in search of a bit of proper isolation (although you’ll have plenty of company in the form of birds, insects and the like…). Not travelling by car? No problem: there are moorings on the river so feel free to paddle along in a dinghy, or take a train to the tiny station of Berney Arms, 10 minutes’ walk away across the field (and reputed to be Britain’s smallest station – one for the gatherer of unusual experiences). Settle in here and it’s important to remember that you’re a guest in a nature reserve, so protecting the wildlife takes precedence over providing loads of facilities. The site does have toilets, and there’s a little part-time café and yacht club bar that also stocks a few essential provisions. Other supplies (for your campfire or barbie) can be scored in Great Yarmouth, a 20-minute drive away or a five-mile ramble along the Wherryman's Way long-distance footpath.

Local attractions

In possession of a small boat? Bring it along and there’s much pottering about to be done in the local waterways – row over to Burgh Castle, a sizeable Roman fort across the river, or along to Reedham for a family day out at Pettitts Animal Adventure Park (also accessible by car in 25 minutes). There are little dykes on site for kids to get to grips with their canoes, and plenty of spots for twitchers to keep an eye on curlews, kites, owls and other bird life. Those on foot can wander along 61-mile Weavers Way, or follow the Wherryman’s Way to Great Yarmouth for beach days, underwater critter-spotting at the Sea Life Centre, a model village, adventure golf and, of course, fish and chips with a sea view. There are historic bits and bobs to visit in the resort too – the Nelson Museum and Time & Tide Museum are both worth a wander, as is the central Heritage Quarter. A little further along the coast is Caister Castle (25 minutes’ drive), built for the real-life Falstaff (of Shakespearean play fame).
