  • Small Cambridgeshire campsite with woodland views
  • Wisbech 15 minutes' drive; Spalding half an hour
  • Dog-friendly; one-acre pitches; no more than two groups at one time
Settle down in a small, secluded woodland on this quiet campsite in Cambridgeshire if you're looking for a relaxing, no-frills outdoor experience. Ruffwoods is a peaceful place to pitch 15 minutes' drive from Wisbech, just outside the tiny village of Tydd St Giles. With very large pitches that stretch over an acre of land surrounded by trees and open countryside, this is an excellent spot to explore the fens of East Anglia. Dogs are allowed at Ruffwoods (which makes sense, given the place's name), and there are plenty of spots for on and off-lead walkies in the surrounding area. In terms of facilities, this back to basics site only takes care of water and toilet access. Campfires and barbecues are allowed, though, meaning Ruffwoods is a good pick for do-it-yourself types who enjoy rustic camping activities. Although the feel is very peaceful and rural here, local amenities are within easy reach, including Wisbech's supermarkets, restaurants and leisure centre (all a quarter of an hour away). While exploring, you could also stop by at any number of inviting local pubs and village shops in the surrounding countryside.

Local attractions

The handsome market town of Wisbech (15 minutes' drive) will probably be your first port of call, whether you're planning on taking a dip at its well-maintained public pool, wandering through the grounds of pretty Peckover House and Garden, a National Trust property, or catching a movie at the independent Luxe Cinema. Make sure that you also get the chance to visit other pretty towns in the area, such as Spalding (30 minutes) with its connections to the Netherlands and boat trips aboard a water taxi, Peterborough (40 minutes) and its spectacular cathedral or King's Lynn (40 minutes) with its excellent range of restaurants, museums and independent shops. For time out of town, you could head to Hunstanton (an hour) and its beaches on the north Norfolk coast. Alternatively, head inland and make the most of the greenery that's waiting to be explored at the Sandringham Estate (45 minutes) or in Thetford Forest (just over an hour).
