  • Luxurious Cambridgeshire glampsite on a private estate near Ely
  • Half an hour's drive to Thetford Forest; under an hour to Cambridge
  • Ensuite safari lodges with wild swimming, alpaca feeding and a bar
Hands up anyone who fancies a bit of glamorous dog- and child-friendly glamping in the fens? Set 15 minutes’ drive from Ely, the luxuriously appointed safari lodges at Horsley Hale Farm await families, couples and groups who'd like to discover six acres of fields, lake, gardens and woodland in the Cambridgeshire countryside. Mains power, lighting and gas heaters mean you are very far from roughing it when staying in one of these lodges. Sleeping up to eight people in a variety of bed sizes, each lodge has a bathroom with shower, plus a well-equipped kitchen with a gas hob, fridge-freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster. Rustle up a feast and gather everyone around the dining table to eat, or move outside to the private verandah to lounge on outdoor sofas, sit at the picnic table or warm yourselves by the firepit. There’s so much to see and do on the farm too – take a dip in the swimming lake and explore its shores by pedalo, take the kids on the woodland fairy trail or feed the cheeky alpacas (it's all free of charge). Got time to spare? Join in with art classes and felting courses for a small charge. You'll also need to set some time aside to visit the licensed bar/café: the Laughing Alpaca (in up-cycled stables) serves drinks, coffees, teas, ice creams, cakes and snacks – just the sort of cosy spot for an artisan beer or cocktail at the end of a fun-filled day.

Local attractions

It’s unlikely that you’ll exhaust everything there is to do on site, but should you crave a change of scenery, go sightseeing in the historic city of Ely (15 minutes’ drive), where you can tour the decorative interior of the soaring cathedral, visit Oliver Cromwell’s House and spot the landmark sculpture of Sarafa the Ely Giraffe. The hallowed colleges and chapels of Cambridge (55 minutes) are fascinating to have a nose around, or you can take the kids punting along The Backs. City life not for you? Simply head for the walking and biking trails of Thetford Forest (half an hour) for a bit of fresh air, or treat well-behaved kids to a day out on the rope courses and Segway trails at Go Ape Thetford (40 minutes). If that doesn’t wear them out, let them loose on the floating assault course at Cambridge Aqua Park (25 minutes) or try go-karting and quad-bike racing at WildTracks Outdoor Activity Park (half an hour). If you’ve got younger kids in tow, take them to cuddle up to the cute goats, donkeys and rare-breed sheep at Church Farm (20 minutes).

Alpaca View shepherd's hut (couples only)

Liked: Beautiful place, stayed in shepherd's hut which was perfect. Lovely log burner that gets it very very very toasty, everything you need for your stay. Outside was very nice, fire pit, bbq, as much wood as you need for any of the fires. The hosts are above amazing, nothing is too much trouble. They genuinely want you to enjoy your stay and they clearly take pride in what they do. Would love to stay again.

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike, I am struggling to think of one thing that could have made our stay better but I just can't.

4 bedroom safari tent

Liked: Thoroughly enjoyed our stay first week of October, made to feel super welcome, safari tent was luxurious with everything you needed, highlight was the unlimited wood for your campfire, feeding the alpacas (which the older children even enjoyed), although we didn't use the bar it was nice to have the option there if we wanted it. Free padalos to use and we had fun feeding the fish, they were huge!

Disliked: Uneven road entering the site.
