  • Off-grid and eco-friendly site on a working farm in the Teme Valley
  • A 30-minute drive from Leominster and Kidderminster
  • Honesty shop with perishables for sale on site
Are quiet and secluded countryside stays calling? Take a look at By the Red Phone Box, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the Worcestershire market town of Tenbury Wells. Amid meadow grasses on a Teme Valley working farm, this is a top spot for making the most of scenic rural vistas. Views of Clee Hill can be taken in from site, and a host of lanes, footpaths and bridleways start on site to take rambling guests on countryside strolls. The natural setting is enhanced by the free-range cattle, pigs, sheep, horses and chickens, but don’t worry – fencing ensures they can’t show up at tents unannounced. There's plenty of birdsong to hear on site, and you can borrow wildlife books to identify what you’re hearing – walking maps are available too. The site's also 20 minutes' drive away from Wyre Forest, 15 minutes from Go Ape Wyre and 10 minutes from the fishing lakes at Woodston Manor. With nature-filled and eco-friendly breaks being of utmost importance, the site has all the credentials for peaceful getaways with a low carbon footprint, including composting toilets, gas-heated water, solar lighting and a recycling system. The showers, toilets and washing-up area are all found in a lovingly restored horse box, and – a nice touch this – if temperatures drop, you can stay cosy overnight with hot-water bottles provided by the site team. When it comes time for eats, barbecues are welcome on site, and you can pick up bits and bobs from the supermarket in Tenbury Wells. The site's neighbours also host a pop-up pizza and perry night at their farm, just a short stroll down the lane; it's held every other Friday evening.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: We like being off grid and away from it all and this camping ground was perfect. The owners are really friendly and helpful. The pitches are level. The facilities are basic, compost loo, no hook up, but if like us you like to keep environmental damage to a minimum this is just right, and it keeps the price down. The facilities are all in a lovely shepherd’s hut. The site is really well placed for lots of local n attractions.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: What a wonderful little site! Lovely clean shower and toilet, in a shepards hut, with great lighting, and loads of loo paper! Fantastic washing up area with a little library where you can borrow books, my children loved this and left one of theirs for someone to use, Great little barn with a few play things for the kids (which was great while we set up just as the rain started!) Lovely to listen to the few sheep in the field next door and a resident owl close by at night. Owners very helpful by offering help when they knew my car window was stuck down (a beer box and some tape fixed the problem!)

Disliked: Not much parking if the site is busy but we have 2 cars as we have a big family and lots of stuff! so that’s our problem! 4G signal wasn’t great but again not to much of an issue

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Simple, clean and quiet. We were only there for one night so it was perfect for what we needed it for. The little cabins looked absolutely lovely to rent. We were in our camper and the field was great.

Disliked: We would have liked to have seen someone who worked there, just to tell us what's near by. Little disappointed by the 'shop' we had hoped to buy eggs and local goods, but it was only bit and bobs for a fire.

Liked: Loved the simple set up back to basics, composting toilet (not as scary as it sounds) toilet and shower were clean, you can have campfires and the limited number of pitches makes the small site friendly. The communication from site owners about local events is brilliant. You also get a larger space so do not feel over crowded.

Evelyn shepherd's hut

Liked: A fantastic, private setup with everything needed for a comfortable stay! The hosts are incredibly welcoming, and took the time to chat with my son about all things football! We stayed in the shepherds hut and loved the firepit, the bed is really comfortable, and the kitchen area well equipped with all the basic necessities. Most of all, the shepherds hut area is in a secluded spot with loads of space for kids to run around and explore. We've recommended it to lots of friends and family and will look forward to coming again!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike at the price!

Local attractions

Close to the borders of Worcestershire, Shropshire and Herefordshire, this site is well-placed for adventures of all kinds. There’s a wealth of urban spots hereabouts, so be sure to cross as many off lists as possible, starting with the museum, swimming pool and shops of Tenbury Wells and the bars, restaurants and brewery of Cleobury Mortimer (both within 10 minutes’ drive). Farther afield, Ludlow (25 minutes) is a must for its castle, market, shops and brewery. Leominster and Kidderminster (both 30 minutes) have even more to entice, from Grange Court and the start of the 40-mile circular Black and White Trail in the former, to the Severn Valley Railway, railway museum and West Midlands Safari Park in the latter. Bigger urban days can be had in Hereford (45 minutes), where visitors should wander about the Black and White museum, the waterworks museum and – perhaps most importantly of all – the cider museum. If history is becoming the draw, the site’s within 35 minutes of Great Witley Court, Berrington Hall, Brockhampton, Croft Castle, Hampton Court and Stokesay Castle, and also within 35 minutes of Stockton Bury Gardens, Ralph Court Gardens and Hampton Gardens.
