Great Family Holidays Since 1974: the Shingler family welcomes you to Lower Lacon Caravan Park
Play area by orange area and top field
Children can play for hours and make lots of new friends
Play park by one of the camping fields

  • Family site one mile from the market town of Wem
  • Within 25 minutes' drive of Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch
  • Two play areas, crazy golf and a supermarket with off-licence on site
Opened by the Shingler family in 1974, Lower Lacon Caravan Park is just a mile from the stunning market town of Wem in north Shropshire. With train and bus services in Wem being within walking distance, the site has easy access to plenty of local attractions, including Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch (which are all within 25 minutes' drive of the site if you'd rather take your own transport). The site has a very convenient and secure set-up, with a barrier system, 24-hour emergency cover and a warden and owners living on site. There are two play areas on site, as well as crazy golf and a heated outdoor swimming pool with a toddler's paddling pool (please take note that the pools are only open during high season for pre-booked sessions only, and weather dependent). For extra entertainment, the J.A.K.K.S. Barn (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) has a bar and occasional family discos. When you're hungry, pick up snacks at the on-site supermarket, which also has an off-licence. The J.A.K.K.S. café and takeaway (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) are on hand for further refreshments. By the pool, there's the choice of CJ's Snack Bar (weather dependent) and the adults-only Windmill Lounge Bar (only open during high season or on weekends during low season and winter), which has a marquee. Lower Lacon Caravan Park has a pretty cool backstory, having started as the back entrance for the Aston Park American Army Camp, a munitions and distribution depot built in World War II (on land purchased from owner Clive's paternal grandfather). During its development, a D8 bulldozer sank in the soil, so the land was covered with three feet of solid materials from local foundries; this can make placing pegs difficult but it also means that the team have never had to turn away any customers due to bad weather as the pitches stay firm.

What customers say

A top family campsite with heaps of activities & a pool. Spacious, tidy sites & friendly staff. Some found facilities a bit old or it got noisy during busy spells. Dog policy got mixed feedback.

Liked The pitch was ample big enough for caravan awning and 2 cars with space to spare for chairs and tables plenty to keep the kids entertained . Friendly campers and staff, on site shop reasonably priced selling a wide range of items swimming pool, bar and club . And much more .

Disliked Only down side for us was the closest shower block had a problem with the hot water so the showers were only serviced with cold water

Powered grass site (large, no pets)

Liked Facilities, pitch size and pool.

Disliked Noisey neighbours playing loud music and just being loud into the wee hours for two nights, yet on our third and last night we were asked to turn our music down (that was not that loud tbf) at around 10pm! Wasps nest in park area that we were pitched close to, so inundated with the little blighters.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel site (super)

Liked This site had everything someone needs! Site staff/wardens were never too far away and always willing to help. Always had a smile on their face, and very professional and polite. Our fully serviced hard standing pitch was level, had to little bit of levelling of the caravan but no trouble! Well kept site, clean and tidy.

Powered grass site (large)

Liked lots of things for kids to do

Disliked was barely grass, there was rock under ground so pegs were bending and was just dust and dead grass on top. pitches very close together. our pitch was incredibly uneven with lots of large holes in. lots of unsupervised children all over the site so lots of problems with bullying/poor behaviour and fires in bins.

Powered grass site (large, no pets)

Liked Size of the pitch, space between. There's plenty for the children on site like the pool (although this is freezing and there's no place to change there and not much toilet facilities at the pool) 2 parks, golfing, animals, kids disco. Staff really helpful and polite.

Disliked The toilets and showers could of done with being cleaned more often. The first time they were good but not so much this time. This may of been due to the campsite being really full due to school holidays
Could do with somewhere to change at pool and a small clean toilet as the swimming pool. As currently you have to leave and go round the corner to one thats not very nice.

Unpowered grass site (no pets, small)

Liked Great to come back with grandchildren after 30 years! Staff were very friendly and helpful especially the manager of JAKKS and the swimming pool. Good communication and organisation and very family friendly. We enjoyed being on the TOP field out of the way and using our bikes to get around. Kids loved the facilities

Disliked It was very very busy and the fields were all occupied as it was good weather in August! The toilets and showers at the top field were just like festival toilets and struggled to cope with the amount of campers. Some people were up until early hours making noise. Perhaps more showers and toilets needed and investments in the cleanliness. Lots of litter - I picked from our field. The 4pm pool slot was too busy but we had it to ourselves at 10am! Could be cleaner but heavily populated.

Powered grass site (large)

Liked The pool, park and roilet facilities on site, the wardens were always polite and helpful, and it was lovely to have the few animals on site also.

Disliked The ground under the grass was extremely hard, was told to use rock pegs, which we did and they bent, and we struggled to pitch up when we arrived. We had a rain storm which caused the rain to pool in our tent porch because the ground was uneven and it couldn't soak into the ground, we have medical equipment with us so we cannot have water in the tent, other unused pitches didnt have the pools of water resting on the ground. The showers have no where to put dry clothes, everything gets soaked, and the male showers were often cold. The tumble dryer is a pound for 10 minutes which I think is a little expensive, was told to leave closed until clothes were dry, but after 10 mins there was no heat although it continued to tumble at a very slow rate.

Local attractions

Shropshire is a pretty peaceful place without too many crowds most of the time, so grab your chance to get stuck into a few gentle activities like floating on the Shropshire Union Canal, river Severn or Llangollen canal (50 minutes' drive). The site is also within striking distance of Ironbridge Gorge (45 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adore exploring the history of a place? Take yourself to spots like the British Ironwork Centre (35 minutes), Blists Hill Victorian Town (40 minutes) and Royal Air Force Museum Midlands (40 minutes), or pretend like you've gone back in time at Attingham Park (25 minutes), a National Trust site. The Quarry (half an hour) is a gorgeous spot for a little stroll in Shrewsbury, and if you fancy something a bit more challenging, Hawkstone Park Follies (five minutes) has sandstone hills and caves. If you're looking for activities that'll entertain the kids, however, make a beeline for Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World (35 minutes). The site is near plenty of historic Shropshire towns and villages, from Hodnet (10 minutes) and Ellesmere (20 minutes) to Market Drayton (20 minutes) and Oswestry (40 minutes).
