  • Dog-friendly three-bedroom log cabin near the village of Knockin
  • A 20-minute drive to Shrewsbury or half an hour to Llangollen
  • Part of a quiet coarse fishery, with day tickets available to guests
Life in a lakeside log cabin ever tickled your fancy? If so, set forth for the Shropshire village of Knockin and a stay at Spring Heath. Here you’ll be able to hide away in a spacious semi-detached cabin in a serene spot within a quiet coarse fishery, with views from your deck out over one of the lakes. The cabin has three bedrooms (an ensuite double and two twin rooms) so there’s plenty of space for all, if you’re bringing the whole family along – and that goes for the dog too… Everything has been nicely thought out here to make life nice and easy – bedding is provided (but not towels) and the kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering stays. The owners have also made the place fully accessible, with an access ramp and an accessible wetroom, to make sure there are no obstacles for travellers with limited mobility. The village shop and pub are about 10 minutes’ walk away, so you’ll have options when it comes to eating and drinking (or you could try Oswestry, five miles away, for more choice). Of course, you may well be heading here mainly for the chance to do some fishing – if that’s the case you have a choice of hanging out at the coarse lake or paying an extra fee for day tickets to the specimen lake. Not into fishing? (Or not all the time, anyway…) Don’t worry, there’s plenty more to fill your days with around here, including strolls around Shrewsbury, walks in the Shropshire Hills and trips over the border into Wales for hotspots like Llangollen and Lake Bala.

Local attractions

Oswestry (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to aim for a day out, whether you fancy a round of golf at one of its two courses, a taste of rural life at Park Hall the Countryside Experience or an arty wander around The British Ironwork Centre, where stunning outdoor sculptures and installations are scattered around the gardens. Whittington Castle (10 minutes) is just outside the town for a taste of the area’s history. To soak up a whole lot more of that, venture a little further to Chirk Castle (25 minutes), Plas Newydd Historic House & Gardens (half an hour) or the ancient Castell Dinas Brân (35 minutes). Shrewsbury (20 minutes) is another place to try, for a wander among its half-timbered houses and pretty churches. More into your long rural walks? The Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is about 25 minutes’ drive away, and the lovely town of Llangollen half an hour for canalside rambles and the chance to cross the UNESCO-listed Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
