  • Family-run site in peaceful rural Shropshire, with firepit hire
  • Near the Montgomery canal; British Ironwork Centre five minutes' drive
  • Within walking distance of pubs serving food; buy eggs on site
Guest after guest takes time out of their day to praise the friendly owners in reviews of Fairhaven Camping and Glamping – that’s got to be a great start, surely? But that’s not all this family-run Shropshire site has going for it, as the location’s likely to be a winner too: it’s in the village of Maesbury, just outside Oswestry, with walks and bike rides directly outside the gates. Local strolls might take you to traditional pubs for homemade food, or to the nearby Montgomery canal for waterside walks, rides on a horse-drawn barge or a stopoff at the canal’s central café for a scone smothered in cream. Heading further afield? The speedy A483 is a mile away for easy travels, but if you’re leaving the car behind you can flag down a bus just outside the site for jaunts into Oswestry and Shrewsbury. Time spent on site should be pretty peaceful – the park stretches out over four acres of quiet green space, with plenty of space to spread out, set up a barbecue or light up a campfire. Firepits can be hired here, and there’s firewood for sale too. Amenities include three toilets, two showers, two wash basins, a washing-up area with hot water, drinking water, free phone charging, chemical waste disposal, waste water disposal and use of a fridge and freezer. A chemical toilet and toilet tent are available to hire. One last thing that’s won a fair amount of fans? The chickens and ducks that live on site, waiting to be fed by visiting kids and providing eggs for sale in return.

What customers say

Great campsite, spacious level pitches. Owner Carrie is lovely, pets are a hit. Toilets and showers super clean. Peaceful spot for walks, but can get busy with limited facilities at peak times, and a bit of road noise. Most folks would come back!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and will definitely be returning! The facilities were basic but great! It was our first time camping with no electric hookup but the only thing we needed was to charge our phones and this was provided within one bathroom (bring your charges) The Children loved the chickens! And the hire of the fire-pits were a lovely touch! We brought our own coolbox, but fridge and a freezer was available to store things! The campsite is a 5 minute drive from Oswestry or buses run outside the site located on the main road. Perfect weekend!

Disliked The signal was very poor with EE - nothing to do with the campsite! So take plenty of games and activities to entertain the children instead of youtube 😂

Bell tent (six person, basic)

Liked Nice chilled out vibe, really friendly and helpful campsite owner, the chickens and ducks were ace! We stayed in their large bell tent which was so lovely, and really spacious for a family of 4. Nice hot showers and you could buy a few bits from the reception including ice lollies, and could refreeze your ice packs in the freezer and pick up ice for free too.

Disliked Very little signal there.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Big size pitches, host was around or could be easily found in her house nearby. Cleaning around and keeping area clean. Straight surface.
Chickens and little kids corner was lovely as it kept kids busy and they could spend time there with new friends met onsite.

Fridge is very useful, I believe there was even freezer. Only good points for that.

Disliked Extra toilet and shower would be good idea, as there is time you could que for it, but I won't take point down for that.

Local attractions

Getting a fix of rural life is pretty simple around here: take your rod over to Weston Pools Fishery (two minutes’ drive) for a day by the water or make friends with farmyard animals at Park Hall The Countryside Experience (10 minutes). If you time your stay right you might also be able to catch an event at the Oswestry & District Agricultural Society showground (10 minutes). Fancy a hit of history with that? Try Whittington Castle (10 minutes), which often stages goings-on like medieval days and ghost tours, or take an inside/outside stroll around Chirk Castle and its gorgeous gardens (20 minutes). If your tastes veer more towards the 21st century, check out the creations at the British Ironwork Centre or check out Cae Glas Park and the eclectic mix of shops in Oswestry (all about five minutes away). Folk who just want to get out for a walk should set their sights on Wat’s Dyke Way (five minutes away), take a waterside wander at The Mere (20 minutes) or nip over the border into Wales to stroll along the shores of Lake Vyrnwy (45 minutes). Fancy a pint at the end of it all? Head to Stonehouse Brewery, a mile from the site, for a tour and/or samples of some award-winning beers.
