  • Quiet meadow site in Shropshire, five minutes' drive from the Severn
  • A 10-minute drive from Ironbridge Gorge; 20 minutes from Wenlock Edge
  • Smart, clean and modern amenities
For a centre of industry there’s a surprising amount of pubs in Shropshire: thirsty work, perhaps, digging all those canals and putting up all those bridges...? The big plus for later generations is that there’s lots of watering holes to wet your whistle in as you explore the area, its history and its cracking views. In between all that, peer down Ironbridge Gorge from this fab site on a 25-acre meadow. Meadow Glamping is a five-minute drive or a 20-minute walk from Coalport on the River Severn.... and the team behind this small, smartly turned-out spot have found just the right balance: comfy interiors, smart and clean washrooms with hot showers, and maximum outdoor simplicity. Kids, dogs and everyone enjoys running through the long meadow grass, which attracts a carnival of bird and insect life. Barbecues and campfires are cool here too, and those Meadow Glamping folks are so cool they’ll give you a lift from public transport hubs. Coalport has a handsome selection of riverside pubs and eateries; if you’re more of a DIY diner there are two supermarkets a 10-minute drive away in Madeley. If you carry on up the Severn, you’ll hit Ironbridge after an hour’s walk or a 20-minute bike ride (10 minutes by car); as well as views of the gorge and the river, you can cruise some 10 museums explaining the story of the place and how this riverside village became a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution.

Local attractions

To see what things were like before furnaces and foundries, take the Shropshire Way out of Ironbridge and walk; you could do the whole 139-mile circuit if you like, or there’s a more modest section of eight miles from Ironbridge to the windy heights of Wrekin Hill, often accompanied by buzzards. Alternatively, drive 20 minutes to Much Wenlock to explore Wenlock Edge, a 19-mile limestone ridge that once formed part of a tropical coral reef. For thrills on the Severn, The Edge Adventure Activity Centre in Wenlock arranges canoeing, kayaking and rafting as well as quad biking and clay pigeon shooting on dry land. If you’re chasing gentler times by the water’s edge, Boldings Pools 20 minutes away are stuffed with carp and bream, roach and perch, and sections of the Severn near the gorge can be fished with day permits. Should you still be hankering for some time travel, it’s a 15-minute journey to Bridgnorth if you fancy joining the Severn Valley Railway for a 16-mile shunting and puffing steam trip up to Kidderminster. You could also take to the skies (kind of) at the RAF Museum in Cosford (20 minutes) or wander the ruined ramparts of the 11th-century castle looking over Ludlow, 45 minutes away.
