  • Peaceful 10-acre wild site with gorgeous views in the Shropshire Hills
  • A 10-minute walk to the Long Mynd; 20 minutes' drive to Ludlow
  • Pick your own pitch; village pub and café within walking distance
Choices, choices… it’s a pick-your-own-pitch setup at Mowbray Meadow, so you can take a stroll around and settle down with whichever view takes your fancy. And what views they are – this 10-acre site is in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with 360-degree views over the surrounding countryside. One thing you won’t have to factor in when selecting your spot is the ground quality – the pitching area is all flat and level, so setting up should be straightforward enough. Composting toilets and showers are available to guests, and you’re welcome to build fires to keep toasty in the evenings as long as you buy fuel on site (no foraging in the undergrowth for sticks, thanks – it’s very disturbing for the wildlife). Speaking of wildlife, you may well spot various beasts around the place during your stay. Red kites frequently circle overhead and you may hear a woodpecker tapping in the trees on a summer day. To see more of the locals, take a walk over to the nearby Long Mynd, where wild ponies roam. That’s just one of the places you could visit for a day out nearby – there’s also plenty to explore around Ludlow or with trips to the likes of Stokesay Castle and Acton Scott Historic Working Farm. The local towns of Church Stretton and Craven Arms are both less than 10 minutes away by car for cafés, pubs and shops. Even closer is the village of Marshbrook – it's about five minutes' walk away and has a pub, a bike hire place and a café that does a very fine cooked breakfast.

Liked: Nick and Sophie are great hosts. They made my stay a pleasure. There are clean and servicable amenities in the form of a warm shower, sinks for washing pots and toilets. The site undulates and I camped on top of a hill in a field surrounded by views of the Shropshire Hills. Pretty Church Stretton and an excellent gastro pub lie conveniently close. Firewood may be purchased from the farmer for a modest fee and permission readily obtained for a log fire. There are pygmy goats and ducks roaming near the farm buildings. On the camping field, there is nothing in view but countryside. Highly recommended.

Liked: Great views of the hills and when it is a clear night you can see a sky of stars. Lots of nature spots- red kites, owls, different mushrooms.. The compost loos were tidy and clean. The hosts were very helpful and friendly. We were camping after a big storm and they answered my enquiries about the site conditions very swiftly before we arrived. The top of the hill where the campsite is situated was dry and easy to pitch even after the downpours. There is a pub nearby which is always a bonus.

Disliked: The water tap didn't work up on the hill, but the ones near the showers were fine. They did explain why the grass was very long (to graze the sheep after the camping season) But it did make walking around near camp harder (saturated boots). Only small issues as I enjoyed the simplicity of the site.

Liked: The site was pleasant and the owner just as lovely and accomodating. The shower provided is warm and the toilet facilities are clean. Being able to have fires was a massive bonus to our group, the owner provided us the firewood and a firepit for a small fee amounting to a generous £5. The location of the campsite felt both comfortably secluded whilst still only a short walk from the local pub and the start of a public footpath walk. We had such a great time and felt welcomed despite us being a group of young lads (23yo).

Liked: The owners were so friendly and welcoming, even driving my car up the hill as there had been rain making it tricky! The views were amazing and we had plenty of space to enjoy our camping. There were ducks, goats, meadow flowers and a great pub in walking distance.

Disliked: The water tap was some distance from the compost toilets and it would have been good to be able to wash hands nearer.

Local attractions

Might you possibly have come to this area for a walk or few? It’s a very fine choice, as the Shropshire Hills are renowned for their hiking potential. Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd are the most well-known spots (and you can walk to the Long Mynd in 10 minutes or so), but there’s plenty more out there too. A good place to start for ideas is in Craven Arms (10 minutes’ drive), where you can drop in on the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre. While you’re there, take a look at Stokesay Castle as well, and browse through the collections at the Land of Lost Content museum. For other days out, you can rent bikes in the local village or head to Church Stretton (10 minutes) for a round of golf or a dip in Carding Mill Reservoir. Acton Scott Historic Working Farm (five minutes) is a good pick for a kid-friendly day out; meanwhile, Ludlow (20 minutes) is an appealing prospect for grownups, with its independent food shops and restaurants making particularly tasty options.
